Forgive us for veering into the realm of the undeniably girly, but after poring over gift registries yesterday, we’ve got weddings and showers on the brain, and a few recent posts about decorating with doilies have got us thinking, too, about lace and its possible uses in the home. There's always the danger of evoking the dreaded granny vibe; still, we think if it's used sparingly and in contrast with edgier decor, lacy patterns can work well. That's why we love these clip-art projects from a recent Martha Stewart Weddings. Of course they'd be great for a girly party, but with a little tweaking they could work for everyday entertaining and décor as well...

If you stay away from pastels and go with black on white, or white on black, the vellum napkin rings in the top image could work for a stylish dinner party. Or choose a bright color for a Mexican-inspired look. If you want something more permanent, print the design on heat-transfer paper and then iron it onto the napkin itself!

The oversized doily pattern on Martha's photo booth backdrop could be fabulous for DIY wall art; download the free clip art from Martha's site, take it to a copy store that can print the large file, and have it printed on canvas that you can stretch on a frame.

Decorating with doilies is something I wouldn't trust myself enough to do right. It's just too easy to end up with the "dreaded granny vibe."

I agree that the actual lace/doily/antimacassar thing is way too Victorian/Granny/Japanese Taxi...

...and the printed imagery on paperware isn't bad as long as it's intended for a wedding - because seeing it says to me "Who's Getting Married?"
