The eyes are made with pushpins, and the mouth is carved and filled with a Sharpie. Hopefully it goes without saying that after this treatment, be sure to cut out the Sharpied part before eating the vegetable.
Haha! This reminds me of a co-worker, who has had this fear of things with googly-eyes since he was a kid. One day, before he got into the office, we outfitted all of his computer pieces (monitor, speakers, mouse, keyboard, etc.) with their own set of googly-eyes.
It looked cute for about a minute... and then it was just downright creepy.

I actually did this last year and it turned out super well. My root veggies were much taller and slimmer, but they still looked good.
