Vase Fillers: Way Beyond Marbles

Now that summer has passed, it's nice to pull a little reminder of the outside world indoors with flowers. We usually just let the stems float freely, but there are lots of interesting new ideas and products to help fill the bottom of a vase with interest. Check them all out, and feel free to tell us about your own!

I have a vase on my desk filled with alphabet magnets that I keep my pens in - it keeps it all in theme and is really, really colourful.

The centerpiece on my coffee table is a long narrow bowl filled with a couple inches of loose chandelier crystals I got on eBay. It adds just a touch of glitz to my otherwise minimalist apartment. The whole thing positively shimmers if you nestle a few tealights into the crystals.

Style-wise, it's the poor girl's way to mimic decorative touches like the Cellula chandelier or those crystal drum shade ceiling lamps.

I'm currently living in Seattle and I've got a vase filled with sea shells and colourful rocks that I've picked up on the beaches on Pudget Sound.

I think this is an old idea, but I always like fresh cranberries floating at the bottom of a vase of autumn flowers.

I just got married a week ago, and for our centerpieces we had 3 cylindrical glass vases: small one with red grapes, medium one with apples, and large one with bosc pears. These were all around one large carafe with a pair of burnt orange calla lillies.

right now I've got a big bowl filled with the classic bright green of hedge apples. I love them! http://www.hedgeballchuckin.com/db4/00306/hedgeballchuckin.com/_uimages/hedgeapple3.jpg

For my faux flowers I use feathers, usually white, and if I'm having a dinner party and use them as a centerpiece I will scatter a couple feather here and there. They add softness and a bit of romanticism.

I have a large fish bowl from Crate and Barrel filled with corks and dried red rose petals we've collected over the last few years. I love the color contrast between the burgundy petals and light brown of the cork against the glass. Plus my wedding flowers have a place to sit now.
