apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#12 - Lesley and David's Pale Lilac Bedroom

Name: Lesley and David
Location: Oakland
Type: 2-bedroom apartment, rented

Why I use color:

1. I love the way paint color can affect the mood of a room. For our bedroom we chose Pale Lilac for a serene feel, with warm wood, copper (plumbing pipe) curtain rods, and red/orange/gold accents warm it up. . .

. . .2. I prefer my mismatched furniture to a set, and having a color scheme really ties a room/apartment together. With white walls, I think my funky furniture would just look like college living.

2 good color tips:

1. If you have know idea where to start with color, look through lots of magazines for rooms that speak to you.

2. Don't think all your woods or all your metals have to match.

2 good color resources:

1. Mark's Paint Mart - (510) 652-0601 - 4156 Telegraph Ave., Oakland
Benjamin Moore paints, expert custom matching, and in addition to the complete line of official Benjamin Moore sample pots, they have generic sample pots of many more BM colors.

2. Alameda Antiques Fair and Other Shop, for colorful art and accessories.

I don't really see a creative use of colors in these photos. It might the way the rooms were photographed.

The room is so dark in the photos it is really hard to gauge any use of color (seems to be a pretty common problem in this contest).

Definitely like the dresser and the mirror.

Simply put...no. There is not a really good use of color; it's rather bland actually. Maybe try turning on the flash?

If any of the violets I see in the second photo are the accurate wall color, this must look fabulous in morning light.

The photos are so grayed-out that it's hard to get an overall impression of color use -- the room looks potentially really interesting.

I love that metal bench in front of your window. So sweet!

The combination of white, lavendar, and dark wood is successful in this entry. I also wish for a better photograph but I can image that it is pretty and restful.

Thanks for the nice comments. I did have a hard time photographing the room, but I just sent in some better photos and maybe the editors will switch them out!

If the walls are lilac--the photos look pretty grayed out on my monitor, too--then the contrast with the dark wood would be spectacular. Personally, I'd stick with the contrast theme via a darker bed frame and darker bedding--maybe pillows in a rich purple. Also, I'd stick with the cool palette and not try to warm it up with contrasting accessories, but that's just my taste (my space is dark blue, charcoal gray, and white, with silver accents). And is that a man playing a mandolin on the lamp base? I love that thing!

Goodness, isn't ANYONE able to put in more than 5 seconds?
Everyone is harping on wall color. Ok, so I'd prefer a warmer color, more toward red, but that's a personal preference. Other than that, nobody's said a word about the light fixtures. I really like the one on the ceiling, and seeing the circular design again in the lamp on the dresser. The wall decorations, flowing window dressings and furniture make for a very appealing combination. And points are also awarded for the fact that this is a rental. I'd be hard-pressed to put so much effort into a place that isn't mine, and that I might potentially have to paint back to white (or black, figuratively speaking) upon leaving. You guys did a great job; thanks for sharing!

Wow. Lilac and pumpkin look great together. Who knew?

I love the lilac color on the walls, it's very soothing and it looks great with the wood furniture. The pictures are a little dark, but I can still see all the color. Especially in the first you can see the contrast between the lilac wall and white ceiling. The art is really beautiful and i love that it adds some accent colors to the space and that pumpkin on the nightstand looks great in the room too. I don't think we've seen a lot of purple in this contest, so I'm glad to see this because I'm not much of a fan of reds and oranges as the main color of rooms. This room seems really cozy to me.

The new pictures are much better - I love the lilac color with the white and wood. And I LOVE your saucy bedside lamp. Nice!

It works; little more. At least you like it.
