apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#44 - Amber's Summertime Modern

Name: Amber
Location: Auburn
Type: Owned three bedroom home

Why I use color:

Surrounding myself with color makes me happy. It's as simple as that. I love combining colors and patterns and beloved objects to make a space come alive. In the case of my living room, bright warm tones energize an area I spend a lot of time in, but in my bedroom I used a light turquoise and huge plants for an airy, relaxed, island vibe. I love that every room has a different mood, to suit all of mine!

2 good color tips:

1. Pick colors you love, not ones that "go" wth what you have. Color choice should be a purely emotional decision. Everything else will fall into place.

2. When painting walls, always go one shade lighter than you think (learned that the hard way!)

2 good color resources:

1. Paint swatches. Sometimes even the names inspire.

2. Fashion magazines. Every season, they manage to create bold new color combinations.

Some real missed opportunities for color with the short walls and the window bay.

Hi NMW - my coffee table is Thomas O'Brien from Target, which I then coated with a darker polycrylic shade (legs were originally a pickled oak color).

Not my personal style, but both rooms feel light, airy and fresh.

Love the art in the bathroom! Do tell! The black/yellow combo is really working for me in there.

Yes! Love the bathroom-you did a great job-the yellow is a great shade.
I too would like to know where the art in the bathroom came from.

Love,

Love the Sailor Jerry print on the bathroom wall!!! I've been searching for something similar in the way of a shower curtain.

is the bathroom a powder room/guest bathroom? i'm wondering where the storage is (and how you function if there is no storage and this is your main bathroom)? i know my question has nothing to do with color, but im so curious where you put your toiletries...

wow are those couches hot pink?

I thought they were those red ones from IKEA.

Wow! Great job. So funky, so cool, so put together. That bathroom is awesome! Great color to accent the floor tile. The white trash can is off considering the palette. Maybe a red one would be that final POP.

Wow! You are so neat and organized! There's no clutter anywhere!
Your bathroom is very cheery. I like that. And it looks like you actually painted the yellow *around* the artwork on the wall so that it looks like it's sitting in its own little nest...brave...it looks much better than had you painted a straight yellow line across and put the artwork right across that line.

Ditto everything. Nice sense of color. Love the tatoo art and the way you painted around it. Sofas are hot. Curtains very interesting.

Hi all - to answer all those interested in my sailor Jerry art - I painted it myself. It's kind of a mish-mash of several classic tattoos.

Hi Lucy - my living room paint is a custom in-between-the-swatches tone ;) Ask Kelly Moore for 05-67AU.

And yes, this is my hallway bathroom so there's not a lot of heavy use. There's a small cupboard to the left that's not visible in the photo that holds extra towels, toilet paper, and a few cleaning supplies.

Fantastic job on the art! I love it even more now!

I love it!! Colorful but bright, sunny, and airy... Proves that you don't need a deep, heavy color on the walls to have a gorgeous colorful room.

You are very skilled at furniture placement. Your living room looks beautiful. I also love how you painted just half the wall in the bathroom. This might work in my bathroom since the walls are so high. Great work.
