Name: Joanie and LinMara
Location: Seattle
Type: Mid-century home (Owned)
Why I use color:
We use color because nature is not just black, white, and grey. We are both very visual and enjoy the challenge of putting different colors together. We spend a lot of time in our house, and color
gives us energy.
2 good color tips:
1. House wares and home furnishing catalogs and websites can be a good source of inspiration.
2. Artwork is as important as furniture in bringing color balance to a room.
2 good color resources:
1. C2 paints are incredible and the large swatches allow you to try the color in different parts of the room in different lighting.
2. Estate sales! Our bedspread is a 60's Vera that we purchased for $3.00! The photo over the bed is from an estate, and the pillow on the bed is made of vintage bowling patches, another estate sale find.
The colors are good, nice choices. In contention but the far wall with the fireplace doesn't pull togewther for me. That great stone FP almost looks like a prop rolled into place. Something needs to pull the wall together. One idea, more bold stuff on that wall, paintings or a mirror if the view behind is good. Arranged to anchor the fireplace geometry into the wall, like this:

This is very warm and has a decidely Northwest feel. I definitely thought of nature as soon as I saw the first picture. I don't care for the bedding because it looks a little flat and saggy. I would prefer a fluffy down comforter. But it looks like a place I would want to stay.
Love the living room...the color, the furniture, the fireplace, the rug....all pulled together nicely.
Great job!
Really like your rug and coffee table.
Love the rug but I just don't get that bedroom and pillow combo.
holy crap jc, what did you do, break into their apartment with your crazy loud art? i'm calling 911.
I absolutely LOVE that fireplace!! Seems a bit lost, though. My personal preference (and it is my personal taste - no reflection on Joanie and LinMara) would be to make it the focal point of the room with the art and furniture arranged a bit differently. Nice color, tho.
JC- yes we would like to do something different with the art, but haven't found the right thing yet.
Oceandreamer56- You are right, the fireplace would be better as a focal point, but we can't do that because of the arrangement of the room - the living room and dining room are in an "L" shape and the fireplace is right between them in the angle between the two sides of the "L." Currently we have candles in the fireplace because wood fires bring too much smoke into the house (apparently a problem with all the houses on our street). We are converting to gas, however, and will soon have gas logs instead.
Thanks for the comments.
