#51 - Jason & Janet's Layered, Complex Color

Name: Jason
Location: Oakland
Type: Two Bedroom Bungalow - owned

Why I use color:

We love color. How color is chosen and used in our home plays a critical role in shaping its mood and character, and says a lot about who we are. Whether used as a dramatic focal point or a subtle accent, color can add vitality and personality, and even a touch of the unexpected.

2 good color tips:

1. In a home, colors with warm undertones will make it feel more comfortable and inviting than colors with cool undertones. For example, blues and greens with warm undertones won't feel cold. Many paint companies provide this information on their color swatches.

2. Color is a lot like wine, with its many layers and complexity. The more you look at color and train your eye, the more you'll see and appreciate.

2 good color resources:

1. Farrow and Ball Paints.

2. The book Mood Indigo - Decorating with Rich, Dark Colors by Vinny Lee.

Nice but I'd try a slightly darker color for the pale yellow wall & ceiling and a shade darker than that on the baseboards.

these colors aren't my style at all, but they work so well. i would really love to see more of this place.

this is a beautiful place, colorful and restrained at the same time. What kind of floor is that in your bath, tile, linoleum, vinyl???

Wallpaper can be so cool and this paper is handled in a good way. Also, love the colors and the desk. The total look is put together but it's also fun - not just boring straight lines, and color makes so much happen in this small area.

This looks sophisticated, would love a house tour.

posted by hanifa on 2006-10-28 12:42:01

I love the blocks of rich color used to highlight the shelves and the artwork.

I also love how the first room is rich red and brown but you added that punch of the orange phone. I agree a house tour on AT is needed. Or on Flickr. Good luck!

Couldn't vote for some reason. Kept getting an error message, though this should be an insta-finalist.

Eager for a house tour... PLEASE.

What a beauty. So classy and stylish. Well done.

posted by Lady J on 2006-10-28 15:55:56

I WOULD NOT use a slightly darker shade of yellow and a shade darker for the baseboards...refering to the first comment...it would drown the wallpaper out and make the red a lot less nuetral...not that red is a neutral color...but that orange phone would lose it's edge with darker yellow walls.

Way to handle burgandy! Gracious and elegant.

Bathroom, I like the burgandy towels with the blue- but I will admit I think that rug is a little to saturated for that blue.

posted by Amy on 2006-10-28 16:02:26

I guess I am unclear about why this should be such an insta-finalist. The bathroom is totally ho hum and the first pic just has color thru the wall paper. Nice desk though (although totally unrelated to the creative color issue)

Very classy use of color. The best detail is the way the dark figure in the painting echoes the black chair in the room.

posted by Paul on 2006-10-28 18:43:28

I'm sorry it just does not work that well as a cohesive design: Nice chair + nice desk + nice wallpaper + nice shelves does not equal good design. It's good pocketbook. The Knoll chair is $1,100 at DWR, the desk I don't recognize but the zebrawood alone makes it a likely high-end item. I see some very nice pieces but no cohesive room design and maybe the germ of a color design.

posted by JC on 2006-10-28 19:40:32

I like this. Not a color scheme I'd go for, but well done. The painted panel behind the shelves are great.
Love the wallpaper, but the beautiful zebrawood desk (Jason Lees Design, JC) gets lost in it.

posted by Stephanie on 2006-10-28 22:02:19

I really like the way the bold colors in the wallpaper are echoed in the other elements of the room, especially the block of burgandy highlighting the shelves. The color variation and the clean lines in the different wood pieces really complement each other.

The bathroom has a grounded with that floor saturated with color (what it is made of?!), but still retains a light, airy, and tranquil feeling with the light blue. The contrast with the deep blue of the hall makes it even more striking.

Nice!

I know these little bungalows like the back of my hand and believe they are one of the most perfect small house designs out there. Perfect house, perfect colours, beautiful execution, and so serene to look at. Top rating and a big vote for insta finalist!

I checked on Jason Lees work. Pleasant but he has borrowed way to many of the vocabularies of the pre WWI modernists. Along with some of their mistakes, to wit, the legs on the console/writing desk are not compatible with any kind of electric vacuum cleaner. This style of leg is very 1930/40 (along with the sharp top edge and the vertical grain around the side... Gilbert Rohde is rolling).but there's a reason Herman Miller and Heywood Wakefield stopped designing legs/feet like this.

I love it. Beautiful, restful, thoughtful. Lots of fuls. That desk is stunning.

Great colors. I love the wallpaper.

the colors are beautiful!. I love the wallpaper and how the colors relate so perfectly to the black chair. My kind of modern. The desk is fabulous too. The hints of orange in both rooms is pretty cool. Especially against the blue walls. You've got my vote for "insta finalist!"

posted by gwendolyn on 2006-10-29 12:27:31

The black chair looks slightly out of place. I would go for a rich brown leather chair of some sort instead.

Romantic.
Classic.
Sophisticated.
Delicious!
Looks like home!

I love the way Jason and Janet used color in their dining room! The use of patterned motif on just one wall and then the how they picked up part of that color on adjcent wall is so clever.

This is a favorite for me, so elegant and warm. I love that phone table, reminds me of my grandma's house, but much more beautiful.

WHere did you get that lovely wallpaper in the first photo? I ran into it in a layout I designed a few years ago at work but couldn't find it anywhere.

I think the bathroom floor is cork! This is so very well done. Fantastic use of color- and great to see some wallpaper.

I love the desk area. Those shelves are fabulous. Where from?

I really like this -- think the wallpaper is nifty. I love the desk -- where did you get it?

posted by Kat on 2006-10-31 09:39:10

This is a winner for me. The use of color is so well balanced, there's nothing jarring. Too many of the color entries get votes just because they have a painted wall in a punchy color with throw pillows of the same color somewhere else in the room. This design uses color with balance + sophistication, there's contrast but nothing jarring. My only suggestion would be to add another smaller picture to the wall by the desk with a matte the color of the leaves in the wallpaper. Hang it randomly and reposition the other picture off center. This adds character and looks less like a catalog photo shoot (albeit a very high-end one!). LOVE the dark hallway color and space saucers framed by the lovely bathroom color and the orange pop is just right. The paint colors work well with the natural lighting, the bungalow style and with furniture.

I'm not a fan of wallpaper and I really don't like the color/pattern that's shown here on the wall but I do like the desk, chair, and shelves. A lot of work went into this but for me it's too or not lived in looking. In the second picture I love, love that dark blue color outside the bathroom. I'd love to know the name and make of the paint? Good luck!!

Wow- really impressed and have not really been impressed with recent entries.

Great job!

The desk is simply wonderful. Very lux and great use of colour all over.

This wallpaper is also on the cover of the Camera Obscura "Let's Get Out of This Country" album. Sorry, that was my first thought.

This is absolutely my dream space and I would love to see more! The color, the furniture...everything is perfect!

posted by Jenn on 2006-10-31 14:28:25

Very skillful. These colors complement each other. Some are bold, but they allow the other colors to breathe as well. This place is warm and handsome. And I disagree with Allison. I like the black chair. A brown leather one would be overkill with brown.

Nice!

posted by manny on 2006-10-31 16:52:15

I'd never think of this color combo but it works so well. I love the red behind the shelves, the wall paper, the wood, and the way the black chair picks up the black in the wall paper. Well done.

posted by LaDonna on 2006-10-31 17:35:50

Hooray for wallpaper! Why not let it be your color statement? I think it's courageous, beautiful, classy, and more likely to stand the test of time (in my opinion) than creating odd shapes with painter's tape and 4 shades of turquoise. Bravo.
It's Osborne & Little, right? Same paper as Christina (house tour) in a different color.

posted by ESP on 2006-10-31 18:23:52

Oh, that's beautiful. House tour please!

Thanks for all the nice comments! Here are answers to your questions . . .

Bathroom - The bathroom floor is dark brown cork. The hallway floor has the original (1922) douglas fir planks, which have an orange patina . The dark wall in the hallway is dark brown with a hint of aubergine (Farrow & Ball, color #36 Mahogany). The hanging towel on the right has thin stripes of orange, red, burgundy, green and light blue.

Bedroom - The wallpaper is from Osborne & Little. I designed and built the desk and wall mounted shelf panel - I'm a furniture designer.

Cheers,

Jason
