apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#6 - Jenny J.'s Contrasting Blues

Name: Jenny J.
Location: San Francisco
Type: This is a one bedroom apartment in Nob Hill, I am a renter.

Why I use color:

I use color to infuse stimulation and contrast in a room and to create a certain mood. A pleasing color combination can make you happy without even realizing it. I choose light blue for my room because it's calming, and to kick it up a notch I painted the wall behind my headboard a darker blue, highlighting the unusual shape of the headboard with the heightened contrast. I used orange and pink accessories and fixtures to complement the blues in the room.

2 good color tips:

1. Find inspiration in one of your favorite things; articles of clothing, little trinkets, flowers in your garden, etc. Start with a certain hue that inspires you and work out from there.

2. Don't overdo it with a variety of bright colors everywhere. Your eyes need somewhere to rest when entering a room.

2 good color resources:

1. Fashion magazines.

2. Nature.

I love the orange and pink accessories with the blue. More please! I think larger scale lamps with an orange or pink base would do the trick.

very interesting color. kind of a periwinkle. i think that maybe there is not enough diversity in the room. i don't feel that the bedding should be such a similiar shade to the wall color. kind of a tricky color to work with because it is already a little feminine and then when adding the pink accents to it and the white headboard i get lost a little bit. i love the quilt though. i also think that a lighter shade of wood could of worked better than the cherry. beautiful choice in paint though. nice entry.

WHat a cheery color, it seems like it could use something on the walls as an accent/to break up the color a little bit. I like the nightstands, do you remember where you got them?

Nice soothing blue, interesting headboard. I like the tone.

What is with that second photo? Anyone can shoot a blanket folded on a chair, how about something more original? and with color?
A WASTED ENTRY. I hope Maxwell&Co are saving the good entries till the end of the contest

Thanks for the comments and suggestions..after looking at the photos I agree with Kim that the bedding needs to contrast with the wall more. I think that chocolate brown & creme might do the trick. Anne, about the nightstands: one was a flea market find (Alemany Flea market) and the other from a thrift store and took major refinishing work.

I love the blue/white contrast. Very cozy and inviting set-up.

Oh, and in response to Lisa's comment:

"Anyone can shoot a blanket folded on a chair"

... What an intelligent observation, no ... um...really. However, maybe you would feel more at home visiting websites like this (THEY CAN HELP YOU!!):

I agree with Lisa about the second shot -- it's true! I was taken aback when I saw it (but that's what I love about this website -- it's by amateurs!). Emily, we don't all have to be cheerleaders. That's boring! Criticism does not necessarily equal anger.

Good ideas and the choice of colors is right, just need better execution.

Cute. But this isn't this a fall colors contest? This looks like spring.

"Contrasting blues" is a misnomer. If they're all blue... there's no contrast. I like the blue though! Best of luck.
