apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#13 - Pearl & Dave's When Color is Thrust Upon You

Name: Pearl and Dave
Location: San Francisco
Type: 2-bedroom rental

Why I use color:

Even though I live in a rental, I feel like color really makes where you live a home. Sometimes you aren’t always given the luxury of determining your color preferences. Our landlord had to re-paint the walls from damage left by the last tenants. We asked him if we could pick the colors. We didn’t have the opportunity to test colors, so we just went with first instincts, and we aren’t allowed to re- paint.

Our apartment has a lot of its own character – wood paneling and molding, coved ceilings, and most notably a wallpapered dining room. Our living room and dining room are adjacent to each other, so we had to pick a color scheme that could be shared between the two rooms. We opted for a “safe” wall color because it seemed the best way to bridge colors in our existing furniture and the character of the apartment. The neutral background lets us add hits of color. For the bedroom and office, we were influenced by the outdoors. Large windows look out onto mature trees and the Bay.

2 Good color tips:

If you have no idea where to start, look in your closet. Typically the colors you like and gravitate to can be found in your wardrobe.

Even when you are in a situation similar to mine where you can’t change your paint color, inject color using textiles, artwork or every day objects. Sometimes you actually feel the impact of color more when it’s in short, concentrated doses. And remember, wood is color!

Favorite type and brand of paint:

Benjamin Moore

Draby use of color!!!!!thumbs down!!!!!

There's no need to be rude. Would you ever say something like that to someone's face?

I really like the last two pics, I wish I could see more of those rooms.

Indeed, those two last pictures are very interersting, and all together your place seems very elegant!

PS: some people love posting negative comments all over the place if you check it out... not very constructive. Especially if you consider that people here are very brave somehow, exposing their most personal space here. I would always have some kind of respect for that, also when not 'my taste'.

Yikes, I'm all for brutal honesty, but "Draby use of color!!!!!thumbs down!!!!!" is a little harsh... In fact, if there were a little bit better photos/lighting, the space could appear to have good potential...

(Also, that's not how you spell "draby.")

i thought it was a lovely example of using color and working with what you've got. hell, its not often that you move into a rental and have to work with existing wallpaper...

nicely done :)

When I see such rude/negative comments posted as carliepop has done I usually click on their profile. Most of the time you find that all they post are negitive things. I feel a bit sorry for them that they can't be more constructive with their criticism.

I second goodnightdean in that they have done a nice job working with the wallpaper. The place has lots of character.

The last 2 pics do have a lot more pop than the first 2, but I'll admit that I'm always sure how to vote with entries that are rented apartments where people do the best they can. I certainly relate, since I'm living in boring beige. You're lucky you got to pick some color.

Do they compare with the elaborate custom jobs in the other places? Not really. But it certainly doesn't look like a rental.

I have to say that your living room looks absolutely cosy.

This space looks so homey. I feel you did one of the best jobs making a neutral background really 'pop' with fabrics and accessories. Just a little practice on the photography would really make your entry stand out. Way to really LIVE in a space!

I olike this space, but I think the photos are not very good, the lighting is off or you took photos of areas in the home that are not very interesting. A lovely home, but not a winning entry.

I can't believe this is a rental. It looks so homey and lived in...in a totally good way. Cheers to making your space your own.

I really don't understand how everyone thinks that the only legitimate "colors" are saturated and "pop"-y. Colors include black and white, and every shade in between.

Indeed, many people overlook the different subtleties in "cool" and "warm" hues of a particular chroma, resulting in disastrous combinations.

This kind of sensitivity to "neutral" colors really float my boat...

I personally love the use of colors here and don't find them "drab" at all (which is the correct way to say what the first poster was trying to say).

I love the seating area with the slipper chair. I would love to sit there.

I also love the bedroom and your dining table. The living room is pretty. You may want to put a big colorful print on the wall. Something with a lot of red. I think it would make the place more interesting and stylish. Overall, very nice apartment.

I'm thinking the people that make negative comments are sitting in their dingy living rooms surronded by empty pizza boxes.

You've got a lovely home there. I love that red arm chair pillow with the clock (?) on it and that black book "shelf"...

Colors are nice, the living room picture is unfortunately a bit cluttered. More care could have been taken to get the "whole" rooms, as opposed to parts of them. It's got a lot of "you" in it, which is also nice, it gives the place a cozy feel.

Carliepop, keep being honest. I used to actually enjoy reading the comments made on this site, when people really debated the merits of somebody's photos and the ensuing comments. Are people not posting photos to hear honest comments? I am certainly tired of all the "Love it!" posts. Loving everything you see shows you have no real passion for anything.

That first photo of your dining room is just amazing. It makes me want to fanagle an invite for thanksgiving at your house.

It's a contest to celebrate creative use of color -- not to critique one's taste or design sense.

You're not living there so your design opinions mean zilch in that department.

If you have comments on how they used color, please share them.

Its pretty, but muted. And I dont buy for one second that argument that "neutrals are colors, and so are black and white" and therefore they shouldnt be criticized in a competition that deliberately uses the words "bold" and "colorful" in the call to entry.

I don't know why the score is so low, I think this is one of the better places I've seen. Love the living room and dining room pics.

Colors are nice, but I'm really tired of robin's egg blue and wasabi. I'm sure it looks great in person, but in a color contest, I think, "Oh, another one." But so what? Home isn't a color contest.
