apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#17 - Courtenay & Jeff's Vibrant, Pop Colours

Name: Courtenay & Jeff
Location: Vancouver, BC
Type: Rented 2-bedroom in a turn-of-the-century brick building

Why I use color:

Like a baby, I'm most stimulated by contrast -- in my work as a graphic designer as well as in our home. Over the years, my boyfriend and I have amassed a treasured collection of sixties space-age and Danish modern furniture and objects in primarily black, white and teak, which we've set against fields of vibrant, pop colours that bring out the warmth of the wood and the brick in our heritage apartment.

Being in a rented suite and on a perpetually tight budget, adding colour allowed us to create a warm, distinct feel for each room while retaining a sense of unity throughout the apartment through the limited palette of our furnishings.

2 Good color tips:

1. If in doubt, consider the materials of your furniture and choose contrasting colours that will bring out their beauty. I love wood against vibrant, cool shades that bring out its golden tones.
2. I also recommend bright, analogous colours that almost vibrate together, such as a red-orange with magenta. However, I find the darker and richer the tones, the less it seems to work -- as with navy and black, my least favourite pairing!

Favorite type and brand of paint:

Benjamin Moore has served us well.

Wow, your blue wall really pops! It's great that you kept the rest of the room neutral. I love, love, love your bathroom.

Wonderful! I love that picture collage above the credenza in the first shot, especially the ukelele. And the bathroom is so fresh. Great space.

I LOVE IT! With your furniture all being black, white or teak they will never be out of style and you can change the mood of the room with a fresh coat of paint or some new pillows/textiles. BRILLIANT! I've always been told to buy your major pieces in timeless/neutral colors and you have followed that rule to a tee.

BRAVO!

That blue couldn't work better with your wood tones and the whites. And breaking up the mustard with the full wall black and white drape is perfect. Genius execution, seriously. Now, where can I get that tortured chrome sculpture?

Utterly gorgeous. I've been looking for the perfect teal to work with my dark floors, and I envy you finding it.

It's wonderful!
I don't even mind that you purloined the theme of my flat in Worthing, Sussex in the 70's. (Time travel?)
Great stuff!

Thanks, everyone, for all the lovely comments! Truly appreciated. To answer some of your questions, the teal paint colour in the living room, which was inspired by the dustjacket of a 70s library book, is called Green Sponge (one of my favourite colour names) and the robin's egg blue in the bathroom is Sweet Rhapsody. Both are from Benjamin Moore. The chrome sculpture on the coffee table is actually a crazy, twistable toy called the Tangle, which never fails to entertain guests. It's available in a lot of design stores, as well as here: http://www.tangletoys.com. Any other questions are welcome!

Oh, and our white and black sofas (plus a black chair that's not visible) are by the Swedish company, Overman. I found the white one on eBay and the other two pieces in townhere, in Vancouve, at separate vintage furniture stores. I'm still thrilled to have found basically a matching set.

Fantastic. Can I ask what neighbourhood you live in? I'm in a two-bedroom turn of the (last) century brick building myself, in Mt. Pleasant... I'm wondering if we're neighbours (and not in any kind of creepy way, honest!)

Perhaps just to clarify: I'm always interested to see how people handle things such as the explosed pipes and radiators and the picture rail and the high ceilings (which I am lucky enough to have too), and particularly the West Coast light, and how to work with the kind of muted gray light we have in winter. I love the way that you have made the walls and the space bright here.

Love, love the drape behind the headboard in the bedroom. What an outstanding use of color and shape and motion. Also, the proportions and balance are spot-on in the bathroom

Stunning what one can do with a lick of paint, and a load of creativity.
Congratulations!

The fabric (curtain?) behind the bed is just great. I have saved, what looks to be the same curtains from the 60's. Wonder if they are the same?

Thanks again for all the comments and votes! To answer a few more questions: Juliet, we're in one of the last few heritage buildings still standing near Coal Harbour, which means we're lucky enough to have a view of the water and a lot of light (though it's true it can be a bit flat at certain times of the year). eli007, our teak platform bed is a 70s danish piece we purchased from a family friend (I can't remember the make). And stt64, it's very possible that we have the same curtains. I got ours on eBay, but I have seen others since. I think they were originally from Sears! Anyway, let me know if you ever need someone to take them off your hands. . . :)

Yes! They are from Sears, it says on the selvage. Mine are not as crisply colored as yours, which look new. The black is pretty solid but the white needs a good drycleaning I think. How funny tho, I have great memories of then being in our house as a kid. Would definatley consider giving them up to someone who would use/love them. drop me a line stt64@earthlink.net

I am so over "mid-century modern" and have been since I "did it" in the 80's...not because it was stylish, but because it was cheap.

You've done an outstanding job bringing out the best of your furniture...Very warm and inviting.....So not the aesthetic of that space age furniture of my childhood.

(My childhood home was a builders showcase circa 1958...thus my aversion to this revival).
