Name: BrittanyKate
Location: Portland
Type: I live in a 3-bedroom house, and I own it.
Why I use color:
Color will be there whether it is purposeful or not, so I'd rather have something to say about it. In my bedroom, I planned the entire room around my ceramic cupcake.

2 Good color tips:
1. I love themes. Pick a theme for a room, such as a collection or object, and follow it for color and furnishing choices.
2. Don't rule out colors. I hate purple, but my dining room was the loveliest silvery lavender when I moved in, and it really is perfect.

Favorite type and brand of paint:
I tried Benjamin Moore Aura for my bathroom, and I was happy about not breathing excess fumes.

Love how you framed your tools for stitchery!

where is the picture of the purple dining room?!

Ha, I totally was expecting the dog's name to be Cupcake!

Heh, the dog is Rufus. He's my other interior inspiration. My house ends up serving as testing grounds for most of my artwork, hence the Rufus portraits on my bedroom walls (and probably the black and white of The Headquarters).

brittany lives in portland and it's been really grey lately. the purple (light violet) dining room didn't show as much color this week as it usually does in sunshine. i'm just upset she didn't show my "strawberry" colored 1988 schwinn paramount road bike.

I covet your nightstand AND your adorable dog! Perfect shape and size - very cool. And the nightstand is nice too. :)

It's not what I would consider "colorful," but I still think it's amazing cute... cute as a cupcake!

I want your nightstand

I get the feeling that the colors are much richer than they are appearing. BK, you should play around with your camera more - especially when it comes to using the flash: it can really kill a photo (i.e. the cupcake photo). The pegboard in the frames is fun!

that nightstand...what is it? i'm trying to figure it out, and i can't! it's really cute, yo :)

Purple's my least favorite color too.
Love your tools-storage bedside table.

Thanks for the nice comments. I really did have trouble photographing. When I didn't use flash, they were just too blurry. You maybe can't tell, but these are two separate rooms--my bedroom has the cupcake, dog, and books, and my "headquarters" has the desk and...uh...other dresser. They are both green rooms, but different greens.
I'm glad you guys like the nightstand. I didn't have much room, so that works well. I just got it off ebay, and supposedly it is a phone stand that came from Nieman Marcus in the 50s. Phone books go in the bottom, there's a little pull-out surface with pencil groove, and I have no idea about that weird handle on top.
Rufus is the perfect size too, thanks.

Where oh Where did you find that little orange storage box with the branches on it? I am in love with your place.

Finally, the world will see that the hemnes bed from ikea is not brilliant yellow like on the website! I bought this bed last weekend and have not put it together yet, I'm still trying to decide if I'm in love with the actual color. I'm thinking of pairing mine with wheat and charcoal bedding from Dwell. Looks like you can tuck stuff into it fairly easily?
Thanks for the photo!

kygirl, I got the orange metal boxes at fred meyer (a local-ish dept store), and they were super cheap. I made the branchy stuff myself to embellish them. Thanks for comments.
st@cy, yes, you can tuck stuff in it just fine. I actually love the color of the bed. My walls (though the photos might not show this) are kind of a pukey green, and I have pukey orange in the room, too, so I love the pukey yellow of the bed.

haha, I guess I'm not a huge fan of "pukey." But I'm happy for you! Now that I know what colors your walls are I can totally visualize it.
Honestly, this bed has given me so much of a design identity crisis. Am I rustic? Am I contemporary? It drove me nuts. I finally decided to buy the black/brown version off of my friend.
I'd love to know where you got the portraits of your dog?

where's the color???

Yeah, I have more modern stuff in the rest of my house, but some old family and dad-made stuff in my bedroom, so this bed actually works pretty well there.
I made the dog portraits. I'm glad you like them. My artwork usually starts out as something I just want for myself, and I really wanted portraits of Rufus. They are made of cut contact paper.
