Fauxidermy: Alternatives to Actual Antlers

It's not news that taxidermy and trophy heads have seen a resurgence of popularity in the last few years, and have been appealing to certain enthusiasts for much longer. Then came the infusion of wooden replicas, cardboard versions, and ornamental variations in many different forms. While some may be over the trend, or never jumped on board in the first place, we enjoy the introduction of different kinds animal forms into our home, and have rounded up some of our favorite examples here...

1 Rare Device is currently featuring Rachel Denny's work "Out of the Woods" in an exhibition that runs from May 1-June 2. In the show are two beautiful pieces, Twin Cabled Buck and Aqua Doe, which she deems textile taxidermy

2 Modern Dose offers this whimsical hand painted deer head, which has a unique storybook quality.

3 New from Wannekes are these gorgeous wall mounted flower pots. Although they are super duper expensive, they are definitely worth swooning over.

4 This great Etsy find is from iheartsammi, who has created a painted faux trophy with a kick of graphic imagery. Highlighting her aversion to hunting, "Bang" offers a twist on the traditional trophy.

5 Propeller Modern offers "Toro", a piece by DFCasa. New York transplants now living in Mexico City give the trophy a Mexican folk art twist.

6 These alabaster deer heads, available at Modern Dose, are one of our long-time favorite iterations of the trophy head. Available in varying sizes and designs, we love the alabaster finish.

7 Dubbed "Feltidermy" by Etsy seller girlsavage, we love the humorous take on the traditional. Hand sewn from her own patterns, these stuffed animals meet interesting fates on plaques.

8 The Radius Trophy from Stylepark is actually a coat rack created by Swiss design label "Yuniic" making the traditional trophy a more modern, functional design.

What exactly is the deal with these? Living in a small backwoods home growing up, my father had one or two deer on the wall, real deer. Those were bad enough. But why these? It's just.. stupid. I do not see the aesthetic in having a yarn deer on my wall.. No thanks.

That is just wrong! Plus it would probably get dusty and dirty pretty quickly.

A couple of these (3 and 8) might work in the right setting. The others are pure kitsch. #2 strikes me more as 'garage sale' than 'whimsical'.

I never got into that whole style. But that's why design is so cool, there is something for everyone :)

I'm not a fan of this trend either. I do like the look on that blue bull's face tho.

You can find deer antlers that have naturally 'fallen', no animal cruelty involved. Deer replenish their antlers every year. So as long as the head isn't attached what is wrong with having REAL antlers around?

The bunny cracks me up. I bet my teenage son would like it.

Animal heads only seem to look right to me when they are in a home placed in the right arena......such as a cow head in a house on a dairy farm or a deer head in a house in country. In the city, they just seem to look a little out of place. Could just be my personal interpretation.

This would be more appropriate for a "hot or not" poll than the flags outside of rowhouses...

And I would vote "not".

I feel all alone in the "I kinda like it" category. I'm actually only liking the bunny and the knitted deers. I planned for months on crocheting one for a kid's room; it would be very colorful.

I think I like it because it doesn't creep me out like real animals, and makes me smile. That's already something, isn't it ?

Loora, you're not alone. I own one of Rachel Denny's "Domestic Trophy" series (it's a cable-knit cashmere buck), and I absolutely love it. I think it's a great piece and everyone who comes over seems to love it too. It looks great with all of my other art and complements my decor quite well.
