Flickr Finds: Julie's Well-Loved Family Kitchen

The kitchens that inspire us the most are the ones that look like people actually use them. And not just for cooking—for eating, of course, and browsing through the mail, and hanging out with a glass of wine, and chatting, and so on. We'd love to do any of the above in Julie's kitchen, with its open layout, cheery colors, and plentiful lighting and seating. Details after the jump...

The beauty of the kitchen in Julie's Denmark home, which she shares with her husband and their 8-year-old daughter, is how each detail really conveys the family's warm and colorful style. Here's a key to the photos, so you can appreciate the details for yourself:

1 Quite a few of Julie's accessories, like the throw pillows on her Ikea chairs, come from Skinny Laminx. The Elica lamp hanging over the range is actually also a self-contained ventilation unit, eliminating the need for ugly ductwork.

2 The sign on the side of the island reads, "Spitting on the floor is forbidden"; it comes from Julie's husband's great-grandfather's margarine factory!

3 Julie went a little Jackson Pollock on her Ikea pendant lamps with some nail polish. This seems like a project that could've been a disaster, but we love how it turned out! Especially nice hanging next to those vinyl wall stickers (the protea design from Skinny Laminx).

4 The island is an old 21-drawer shop counter; Julie and her husband discovered it at an antique shop. They painted it white and added the red knobs and the oak top.

5 Bright Ikea chairs look great with the more muted tones of a Moroccan rug. The artwork hanging above the fireplace and to the right is a picture Julie's husband drew of his father when he was nine.

It's an odd kitchen--I hate the stove standing alone at the end of the island (how inconvenient would that be?)--but I love it anyway. You just know she has great parties and that her friends love when they get invited for dinner!

What a cozy kitchen! I could totally see hanging there with the family. The countertops and fridge are great.

So warm and cozy...I love it! If you're going to hang out in the kitchen, it should be just this inviting. And a fabulous blog, too....

I thought it seemed like the sort of kitchen that happened over time, so I was completely impressed to see the "before" photo on the blog!

@madsarah--i too was worried about the stove standing at the end of the counter, but thanks to the wide window sill right behind, it works really well. since there are 6 burners and one isn't often using them all, i usually set a tray on one and use it for spoons and such. it actually works pretty well. we wanted to be a little bit alternative and completely rethink things when we redid this last summer, so that's why the stove ended up where it did. :-)

@everyone else--thank you for your sweet comments!!

I would copy what you did with the grouping of chairs in the "eat-in" area. Do you ever find that you want a table in there?

I'm so thrilled to see julie's beautiful kitchen on this site. I've been an avid fan of her blog for quite a while now, and so glad to see her talents here. The red refrigerator... I just love it.

@labchick we don't have a table there, because we built an addition (you can see it a bit through the windows (which used to be the outside of the old house) on the pic where the t.v. is in the far corner) and our dining table is out there in a room designed just for that purpose.

what we find is that we eat our daily meals at the island (we have two more stools, they just were elsewhere when i took the pix).

I love your kitchen! I really want an orange kitchen but have been looking for the right color/shade. Can you tell me what paint and color you used?

I like the stove at the end of the counter - very imaginative use of space - I can imagine it might be difficult for someone to move behind a person cooking at the stove with the waste bin there agaisnt the wall but its an interesting idea to keep in mind when planning kitchen layouts
