Flickr Finds: Mchl.mchl's Stacked Books

11-11-08mcbooks.jpgWe're always interested in the unique ways people display their books in their homes. And we're also always interested in that awkward space underneath stairs. When we found this flickr photo, we really liked it. Not only do we like the mash-up of interesting items in the shot, we really love the way the books are casually stacked against the square tiled wall, breaking up the geometric pattern.

I have to admit, the abstracted look is attractive. But isn't this hard on the book bindings?

that almost makes this pile of books sound attractive, or like a consciously planned design move. not too impressed.

Not only is that a cluttered unattactive mess...
...but it's overloading that cheap IKEA table to the point where it's bowing under the weight.

Get a bookcase already.

Looks interesting, but clearly these people use books as decor rather than actually read them. How would you retrieve a book in the middle without destroying the pile...?

It's damaging the desk AND the books themselves. A terrible idea...

People are very interesting. They will come up with very strange and effective solutions to their immediate problem, and that's ok if they like it. But then they will post it to flickr and someone will mistake this for good design, call it a plausible suggestion, derive inspiration from the stupidest things on account they'd never witnessed such an accomplishment.

Here we are; this is what the real world is doing to solve their problems of too many books and not enough cash for a shelf and crazy under-stairs space which would otherwise be too many problems to live with. It's different than stacking the books on the floor, that's something. You can try this. A photograph of it as displayed proves this has been validated as an artsy solution, analyzed and posted on AT as "interesting" due to the proximity of this pile to a backdrop of square tile. Just because I can't make this work in my apartment and don't need to doesn't mean I can't empathize with readers who are just getting nowhere and all of a sudden get inspired by a precarious pile of books under the stairs.

Um... is there some very obvious reason I'm not seeing why some of those books cannot go on the floor in the empty space under the table? What's the premium here, derring-do or access?

Doesn't do anything for me, but the VERY FIRST thing I noticed was the copy of Contact! Great, I'm officially a Sagan fangirl XD (I THINK that one on the bottom is Pale Blue Dot, the spacing of the title looks about right, and I thiiiink that's Cosmos up the top.)

So yes! The design could be better, but points for the Carl Sagan books *grin*

adorable. what is it with this not being "good design"? c'mon folks. who's going to waste their time trying to find a bookcase that goes under their stairs when they can be unique?
