apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Flickr Finds: Small Portland Kitchen

0430_portland01.jpg

This little kitchen in a Portland, Oregon apartment uses a mirror over the sink to great effect. It's not unlike having a window over the sink, as the mirror reflects light and movement and adds a "view" to the tiny room...

We also admire the built-in storage flanking the kitchen's "entry" and the touch of color the coral-colored lantern shade gives the otherwise black and white kitchen. photo: Flickr member

This kitchen is very charming and practical. I would remove the picture frames because they are bound to end up covered with grease.

Why remove the picture frame? It looks like it would be easy enough to wipe down along with the mirror.

Oh sorry, I was stuck on the mirror and didn't notice the little pictures. *blushes* =)

I had this exact kitchen layout in a San Francisco studio apartment--I think it's pretty common here in buildings of this era. I loved that little but efficient kitchen, and this one is just as sweet. It probably has a miniature stove on the other side of the fridge.

I had that exact kitchen, too, in a Chicago studio apartment, and I've seen a bunch of them here on AT. Same glass front cabinets, so pretty. My kitchen was a bit bigger and had a built-in Hoosier and a cute ancient refrigerator. I'm sure it's all torn out now, replaced by dark wood cabinets and granite countertops.

What I love is the black & white trim and tiles with the punch of the red orb lighting fixture! And, yes, the mirror is used to very good effect here.

It's a cute kitchen - but a shame that the landlord cheaped out with the sheet-vinyl flooring and vinyl cove moulding instead of linoleum tiles and quarter-round shoe moulding.

cute kitchen.
I would remove the picture frames not because of grease, but because it looks cluttered.

(i can't believe how many people reading this blog are paranoid of kitchen grease. seriously, are that many people avid deep-fryers?)

I have to agree with jac7890. These aren't commercial kitchens and they can be easily cleaned. I love this little kitchen.

i'm not a fan of the kitchen. really you can't see much of it and the part i can see isn't cute at all.
there are things called magic eraser sponges that get grease off like it's nothing. plus it doesn't look like there's a stove near those picture frames anyway so why would they get greasy?

how sophisticated this little ordinary kitchen is just with the black and white details.

Cute, cute kitchen. I love the glass-front built-in cabinets, the paper lamp (like a red sun). I agree with the others that all those smaller picture frames don't look quite right there. I think a big green plant would be perfect on that ledge and set off the crisp black-and-white color scheme nicely.

Oh my god, that looks exactly like the kitchen in my old studio in Portland. It's too funny how many people had this layout.

I have this kitchen layout in my Portland studio but I keep my fridge on the outside of the built in cabinets so that I can have a full-sized oven. I think 90% of the studio spaces in Portland have this kitchen layout.

I agree, this is beautifully done, not just the mirror but the red lampshade and the black-painted doors of the glass cabinets at the side. The person who lives here achieved just the right balance between the personal and the original bones, it's just lovely.

It's a cute kitchen, and would be even cuter if every flat surface weren't covered in stuff. I know storage is an issue in a small space, but all the picture frames, stuff on top of the fridge, etc. make it look messy. Paring it down would help.

I have no problem with the pictures on the counter and had a kitchen similar to that one but I had the overhead cabinets above the sink instead of on the end wall and I had the open shelves where the sink was only where the glass door are here and my stove and fridge, while on the same side of the kitchen were swapped around and I used a Microwave cart to add counterspace since these kitchens, often built in the 20's often had a severe shortage of useable counterspace for anything other than drying your dishes.

Don't get me wrong very cute kitchen but a word on cooking and pictures, it doesn't matter where things are in the kitchen, even sauteeing or indoor grilling etc will cause grease to permeate everything if you don't use a spatter shielf of some sort and many of those old kitchens didn't have an exhaust fan, if they did, many probably don't work anymore (the kitchen I had that was similar had one, but it didn't work). I live in a 1960 era kitchen now with a working exhaust fan but even that is somewhat effective. I know as I DO cook.

here though I'd have moved the glass vase over by the wall, less likely to knock it off and be broken and I do agree she needs to clear off the top of the fridge but I like how she fixed up the place w/ the mirror and the light however.

When I lived in my first studio apartment, same era as the one shown, it was long galley, original as well and it had no exhaust at all and grease dirt and dust got on EVERYTHING, even if not right next to the stove and only ammonia seems to be effective on grease.
