apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Flickr Finds: Spare Room

5-21-09-spare-room.jpg

We sat on this picture for a while, fully expecting and dreading a chorus of "but it's not good design!" But it reminds us of our grandmother's house. And we felt wonderful there. And isn't that the ultimate goal of a spare room, to make guests feel wonderful, and even add to the flavor of a good memory?

The muted pastel colors, the vintage furnishings, and the diffuse light all contribute to the cocooned mood of the room. And, unrelated to nostalgia, we're digging the checked curtains.

I love the tealy blue and orange together. The room does remind me of my grandma's house, which is sweet. It looks comfortable and cozy.

It reminds me of a house I stayed at in Mexico when I was on my honeymoon. (With my ex, unfortunately....)

Normally it's not something I would like, but this is really cozy.

There is something comforting about seeing a space like that. Very nice.

Yes, it reminds me of a room in my Grandma's house where I was told to take a nap, even if I wasn't tired. Sorry, not into it.

The room where all the leftover furniture went. Where we hang the picture we don't want in the living room but Aunt Jo gave it to us for a wedding gift and we can't get rid of it. The room where the luggage is stored. The place to put the old lamp that Cousin Sue wants for her apartment when she moves out, but has no room for now. And someday we'll get new curtains but not now because these will do just fine.

It is strangely cute and it does remind me of my grandmother's, but it does look tossed together which basically what the spare room at my grandma's was - whatever wasn't needed in other rooms and stuff found at thrift stores. It only got an update about seven years ago when my grandmother inherited all of her sister's antique bedroom furniture.

I'd rather have my spare room serve more than one purpose. This could only be used as a guest room really - maybe some storage -- but the desk is too cluttered to work at or sit a computer.

If this is bad design, y'know, someone really should break the news to Etsy.

It's a really cute room, one that takes you back to a time now gone.
