Flickr Finds: Vertical Storage in a Tiny Kitchen

3-26-09-vertical-kitchen.jpg

This impressive coated-wire grid storage system makes use of all kinds of vertical space above the stone counters in this tiny kitchen. It's a potential alternative to the popular pegboard hanging storage (a la Julia Child) we've been considering for a while now.

In fact, this system combines open shelving with the pegboard concept, and it appears a little more flexible (and possibly cheaper) than Ikea's GRUNDTAL system.

I think it's simple, organized, and lets the stone and finish/colors of the objects stored/displayed in them stand out. I like it.

It looks all jumbled and chaotic. In the space pictured above there is a perfect, recessed alcove just begging for some nice, neat wooden shelves. Coated wire shelves should always be the last resort.

Why should a kitchen be a showplace? Those of us who use our kitchens for what they're meant for (or as the cowboys say, "ridden hard and hung up wet...") don't really care about how they look to visitors. I love a homey kitchen as much as anyone, with warm colors, ad hoc collections of tools or objects, etc.; but most people on the planet, outside of major North American cities, have functional small kitchens, and are content to use them as areas to prepare food rather than impressing guests.

Chill. It ain't a beauty, but it's alright.

I had a setup something like this. The real problem was cleaning the thing, which will need to be done eventually. All those little white wires collected dust, and if you damp washed it, they inevitably started splitting and the metal rusting under it. It was a humid environment and the kitchen fan didn't work well, so you may have better luck.

I would consider it a functional 2-3 year option, while saving/planning for something more permanent and nicer.

I went to actually look at the flickr photstream of the person who took this picture, and it is of a kitchen in a short stayrental apartment, which of necessity will have different requirements than someones' home. (I do pity the poor cleaning lady who needs to clean all that open grid-basket shelving up near the ceiling

maybe it would look better if it were in stainless steel. I don't know the white isn't working. the rest of the kitchen looks really nice and that storage is an eye sore

Oh, Lord it's like it's 1987 again. I used to have a bunch of this stuff when I worked in an organization store. White wire grids, Elfa white wire drawer systems, Closet Maid white wire shelving.... After a few months of greasy kitchen dirt, it's going to get ugly.

I just think it looks really "busy" and in a small kitchen it makes the room feel even more cramped. Especially as, looking at the other picture of the room, the rest of it is very bland so the eye would be drawn to this wall. I agree that there are other ways to achieve the same amount of storage without losing your deposit.

However it shoudl be pointed out that this is a kitchen in a apartment the flickr person rented for a week, so clearly it was posted for information rather than as an indication of their own taste or style.

I imagine the owner of the apartment (rather than the short-term renter) put the system together.

It's a nice concept, but not very well executed (knife rack near floor, spices below waist level).
