Fun Weekend Project: The Painted Closet

We love the little surprise details of a home that aren't apparent right away when you walk in. A brightly painted closet interior is one of these, and it's such an easy weekend project that we have to wonder why we don't see this look more often. In case you've been in search of a project for this sunny Sunday, here are a few painted closets to inspire you, some fancy and some plain, some familiar and some new to Apartment Therapy...

1 This yellow is just the perfect choice for a closet off the kitchen, originally featured in Cottage Living.

2 A bold, unexpected red works well in this dramatically wallpapered room, designed by Nina V. Freudenberger of The Cultivated Home (from the Design Public blog).

3 A bright closet in a white room is especially nice, as it provides a pop of color that can be hidden away at will. Image from Envelope A + D (previously featured on Apartment Therapy here).

4 Applying wallpaper inside a closet could also be fun, if a bit more involved than just painting. Read Josh and Summer's whole house tour here.

5 This fancy-schmancy pink closet is the ultimate girly indulgence. From ehow.

What do you think? What colors would you choose for your closets?

I *love* this idea, but in order to paint my closets, I'd have to first empty my closets... Those of you who have seen the jumbled, packed-to-the-rafters messes that are my closets know this is more easily said than done.

I always used to do this when I was younger because I always wanted to re-paint my room and my parents wouldn't let me do it more than once a year so I would buy some paint and do the inside of my closet.

One time I had all neon colors (green, red, day glow)

I think I will take my kids to the store today and let them pick out their own colors!

I painted my closet after I had to empty the whole thing out to replace the water heater that resides there. I figured, hey, it's empty, this is my big moment, me, the laziest. It was a surprising amount of work (for me) but I did it in a few hours. Then, another hard part, reassembling the closet system that was in there. The color I picked didn't turn out quite the way I wanted (sort of a pale egg yolk color; can't remember what I was going for; no time for swatches, or I never would have completed it) but I'm always proud and happy when I look in there. And it gives me hope that I might actually tackle something else, say painting the bathroom.

I am actually mid-way through my closet painting project.

My closet is the one room of the house I felt I could be over-the-top with... I found a wallpaper I liked on a UK site and recreated it (by hand - tedious!!) in my closet. Soft pink walls, medium pink trim, splashes of orange and aqua... It is wild, but a perfect fun space for me to display my guitars (so nice to be able to walk through my bedroom!)

Here are a few links for those curious:

In progress - sketching out the wallpaper:

I still have a few projects in there, but it is fun. :)

Peacock blue, tangerine, kelly green---I've done this with all these colors. Much more finished than any accent wall, and inevitably a pleasure to peek inside...it's as if I had sometimes forgotten all about the jewelry box behind the closet door!

I'd love to do this but I'd have to rip out the previous owner's padded walls first. Why would anyone install padding in a wardrobe?

I did this once and used a medium blue color, but the problem was that it made the closet dark, and it was difficult to actually see the clothes (obviously I don't have a light in the closet). Ended up going back to off-white.

I love painted (or wallpapered) closet interiors. I have moved a lot and every place where I could do so, I have painted the interiors of at least the clothes closet and pantry. Even when I have merely repainted the closet the same color as the walls, a refreshed space has made a great difference every time I open the closet door.

Oh, please please please don't wallpaper any closets. PLEASE. Paint them all the glamorous, exciting, dramatic, interesting colors you want, but please don't wallpaper them. Ripping off wallpaper is a pain in the best of circumstances, and standing in a teeny-tiny box of a space with poor lighting and lousy ventilation is far from the best of circumstances.

And yes, I say this as one who has had to unwallpaper a couple of closets. (Including the ceiling and the shelves. Seriously. If you absolutely have to wallpaper a closet, don't even THINK about wallpapering the ceiling or the shelves. I'm pretty sure Dante said that sends you right to the fifth circle of hell.)

Daffodil - I pretty much feel that way about wallpaper as a whole... since I have had to remove it from every room in my home. At least I have plaster - steaming it makes it easier.
