Varian Designs Launches New Rustic-Modern Collection

62409variandesigns1.jpgAt this weekend's Dwell on Design convention, San Francisco-based Varian Designs will be exhibiting pieces from their new collection of gorgeous rustic-modern furniture. Here as in past collections, designer Forest Dickey combines the rough-hewn beauty of old wooden beams with sharp, sleek architectural forms, adding new materials like steel trestles and slabs to give these new pieces a more industrial aesthetic. The Broen collection specifically focuses on blending natural materials with man-made. Dickey often chooses reclaimed wood, like white oak salvaged from whiskey casks, for its unique aesthetic properties. He also uses sustainably harvested woods and recycled laser-cut steel. The combination of these materials creates pieces of furniture rich in textural contrast.

Check out the rest of the Broen collection at Dwell on Design. Varian's earlier pieces (like the dining set above) are also worth perusing; they're lovely just to look at, or you can contact the design firm directly for commissions.
