apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Garage Conversion by Shed

We're not above living in a garage, and certainly not if it's been designed by these folks. Shed is a Seattle-based architecture and design firm with a clean, modern aesthetic and a practical approach we can get behind.

It's amazing how prominently words like practical, pragmatic and efficient show up on Shed's webpage, and this garage conversion certainly bears that out. With a lofted sleeping area, kitchen, bathroom, and a surprising amount of storage, this conversion is a full-fledged studio apartment. Now if it would just show up on Craigslist...

We got word of Shed's work via local design store Velocity's blog, Simpatico.

I normally hatehateHATE garage conversions because they're generally done poorly and tend to make the house look unbalanced (since you can tell it's missing a garage), but this is fantastic. Very well done. I especially like the view from the front.

It looks to me as if there's barely any room for a person to sit up, much less stand up, in the lofted sleeping area -- are they expected to simply slither off the mattress and down the stairs? Otherwise it looks lovely.

Amazing, but you'd never be able to have a glass of wine and walk up or down those stairs to the loft.

Not everyone would be comfortable with this particular loft style....but for most young people....it is perfect. It's such a great job.

I liked it until I saw the sleeping area. There's not enough room for someone to be able to sit up in bed and being in all rights, if someone needs to go down steps, they need to be able to stand. Plus the stairs don't really look that safe - makes me wonder if this is fully up to code.

The bed area only seems practical if you use your bed exclusively for slowly maneuvering in and out of bed. No reading, no waking up quickly and probably alone.
