Another Take on the Vertical Garden: Green Pockets

91609greenpockets1.jpgIn the past we've admired the Woolly Pocket vertical gardening system, but this sleeker, more streamlined take on the vertical garden, from designer Maruja Fuentes, passed us by after its debut at the Milan Furniture Fair back in the spring. Ceramic tile pockets create a beautiful scaled effect, which would be gorgeous for a backsplash or any tiled wall...

The pockets can be interspersed with flat tiles in a random pattern or hung close together and densely planted for a look that more closely resembles a traditional vertical garden. The tiles are made from recycled materials.

The Dwell blog points out that these pockets would be perfect for a little kitchen herb garden, if you've got a sunny indoor or outdoor wall convenient to your cooking area. We like them as bathroom tiles too, perhaps cradling tillandsias (air plants) that like a steamy environment but don't have high water (and drainage) needs.

Sadly, the Green Pockets don't seem to be available yet to the consumer. Let's hope somebody commissions Fuentes to make them for sale!

That last image decided it for me. I love the concept, but I'd love the product much more in a different color or, better yet, metal. Think of how cool these would be in copper or galvanized? They would look much more like fish scales and much less like... bathroom fixtures.
