They constructed bed frames, laid out gravel pathways, and created steps leading to the lawn area. Blue Fescue, Cabbage Palms, Buxus shrubs, and Morning Glory fill the planters. They lined the left side of the garden with trees and shrubs and installed a willow screen on the right side to add privacy and to cover the neighbor's ugly fence. As a final touch they repainted an old bench for the lawn area. The garden and the back of house are still work in progress, but the garden looks so much better already.

Those dogs are too cute! The yard looks great too...I like how you split it up, it keeps it from feeling too long and narrow.

How about putting vegetables in the squares. Neat blocks of fresh greens would look and taste great.

Thanks AT! And thanks commenters! James- we have a raised planters in another part of the garden where we are sewing veg. Placing them smack bam in the middle of the garden wouldn't have worked - they'd get trampled/eaten/peed on by our dogs!

awesome! are those railroad ties? or pressure treated wood... i'm thinking about embarking on a similar task, but my lot is 1) large, 2) sloped and 3) sandy... not optimal. if anyone has resources to help let me know.

Looks amazing and lots of great work. I'm confused as to the addition of shrubs in raised beds though. Veggie garden? The color, texture and not to mention, the edible factor of that would have been much better than planting four boxes of shrubs and cover.

Jberickson- the trees and shrubs in the raised bed on the left hand side of the garden (if that's what you're refering to) were planted so that when they have grown in a bit, they will provide some privacy from our neighbours on that side. It's hard to tell in the photos, but the lefthand wall only comes to about shoulder height.
As for the four boxes and why they don't have veggies in them... I covered this above- we have two big dogs who get a lot of use out of our garden. Imposing a vegetable patch smack bam in the middle of the garden would have meant that the veggies would not have survived being trampled, eaten and peed on by dogs.
We have raised planters elsewhere in the garden (not in the photos above) where, you'll be glad to hear, we're growing vegetables - in a spot that gets good light, is right beside our kitchen, and away from where the dogs charge around, i.e. a place that makes sense for us.
