Grass Gardens by Metaphys

We love the way little patches of grass are used as modern accessories in chic Scandinavian-inspired interiors. But we never bought the look for actual use in our home, until this. And though Metaphys' grass garden series is far more high-concept than a little square planter, we're sold.

The gardens play with dimension in a way that made us feel clever when we thought it through: the Hanging Frame hangs flat against a wall, static and traditional; the Standing Frame evolves to stand on the floor and engage with three dimensional space, and the Circle Garden lays down, fully inhabiting the horizontal plane. Or something.

Inside each garden is a tray to hold the included growing medium, described as sponge balls filled with nutrients (and not soil, we assume). Sprinkle on the seeds and water it, and in a week you'll get sprouts. The gras should grow and last for 4-5 months, during which time you can trim or allow it to grow wild, per your fancy. We would love to hang another picture, a photograph, say, nested within the square frame.

Here are the details on all of the models (available at A+R Store):

Hanging (square), $60

  • Small: 12" w x 12" t x 1.5" d

  • Large: 15" w x 15" t x 2" d

Standing (rounded), $65

  • Square: 7"w x 7" t x 2.5" d
  • Rectangle: 13.5"w x 2.75" t x 2.5" d

Floor (round), $105

  • Size: 15.75" wide

hmm... wonder if you can re-fill it after the grass dies? do they sell refills of the sponge balls? i'd get the floor-round one and put kitty grass in it. My cat would love it and it would look cool.

This is cool -- I think I might re-purpose an old white frame for something like this on my wall.

I saw these in the A R store (sans growth, unfortunately) and apparently refills are available. The sponge balls are really cool, like little bits of styrofoam

very cool. those are cooler than my cinder block idea: http://www.flickr.com/photos/art_chel/533259578/in/set-72157600319268858/

I would like to take the large rectangular one and turn it into a window in my hallway. I would like to punch through the drywall, place this in the wall and plaster around it.

My case maybe an isolated one but I did the grass thing. About 5 or so years ago faux grass displays were popular. I decided to opt for the real thing. It was nice until the real bugs came.

Good luck grass growers

If anyone is thinking of DIY-ing something similar -- Smith & Hawken has a large shaker of wheatgrass seeds (it's about this size of a soda can full of seeds) for $8.00!

I did something similar with a tray like this filled with soil and wheatgrass. It only lasts 3 weeks start to finish but looks very cool and makes my cat happy.
