apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Inspiration: Vertical Gardens

01_04.13.09_VerticalGarden.jpgInspired by the tillandsia wall garden at the Bardessono Hotel that we featured recently on Apartment Therapy, we have been trying to figure out how we could do something similar on our balcony. The small square footage sets a limit on how many plants we can have. We tried to grow a few vines but with little success. A vertical garden would be a perfect solution. Flora Grubb Gardens, the San Francisco shop behind the tillandsia wall garden, has created vertical succulent gardens before. The one at their shop (pictured above) is amazing. More photos after the jump...

The idea behind vertical succulent gardens isn't new. We have posted about a few of them in the past. We love the one featured in Metropolitan Home with a stunning selection of succulents in different colors, shapes, and textures. Vertical gardens by Patrick Blanc are also very inspiring. The composition of the plants in his installation at a Melbourne Central shopping centre is stunning.

Flora Grubb Gardens
created another vertical garden for an outdoor courtyard adjacent to a small cottage. The beautiful succulent installation is perfectly balanced by Myers asparagus and echeveria directly below. We are also envious of the outside concrete soaking tub from Concreteworks.

If you are interested in creating your own vertical gardens, you can learn about the supplies that you will need here.
Also if you have never been to Flora Grubb Gardens in San Francisco, you should definitely visit to get inspired.

Gorgeous, I love them, and I'm absolutely willing to pursue vertical gardening.

My issue: how to accomplish it in order to present a view outside a window or door, next to a shared property line fence (where I cannot attach anything TO the fence), and something that will withstand the very high winds that leave the ocean and buffet my property (we're talking wind tunnel for 3-4 months of the year).

Any ideas?

I'm willing to have something custom made, for at least 3 areas outside windows (that presently just have a view of a standard fence), just not sure where to find some expert help.

wow. i love it! I wonder how much light does it need? I have a north facing wall that would look great with this.

I totally adore these!!!

In fact, we have a giant one here in Madrid, belonging to the CaixaForum Foundation, which I see everyday but never get tired of contemplating - I truly believe it is amazing. Check it out! :)

I have two small balconies off of my apartment (4'x8') that each have a solid wall around them instead of a railing. I'd like to do a vertical garden to try to capture as much sunlight as possible-- at least for some of the smaller herbs... has anyone else tried this?

Oh! My. God!! I want one. I'd been oggling the second one in Garden Design for a week now, but the first one is almost wow-er.

I, too, am interested in light issues and upkeep.

This is gorgeous... I wonder if a "fake" one can be made to hang it inside and not have to worry about sun.
