In the process of cleaning up and redoing our backyard, the amount of garden debris that we've collected has far outrun our weekly curbside composting pickup. In a recent dead tree branch and overgrown bush ambush, we were overwhelmed by the pile of branches that we amassed and had visions of spending nights sneaking our green piles in to the neighbors' bins for the next few years...lucky for us, we found a better solution. After clearing out the overgrown area, we rented a wood chipper and turned our pile of branches in to fantastic backyard mulch!
So far, we've used the mulch when planting new trees, as a layer for weed control, for landscaping and to enrich the soil in areas where we'll eventually want to plant.
We're on to round 2 next weekend and already have the next batch of branches ready and waiting...

i had been considering this for my own yard, as it's quite large and we have tons of brush. we have started getting at the pile by burning it in a firepit on chilly evenings and sitting around the fire, but we'd also planned on mulching our yard soon, so your solution is really best for us. how much did it cost to rent and how hard/dangerous was it?
