SF Good Questions: Where Can I Find Silver Plant Pots?

4-17-silver pots1.jpg
AT:SF, Do you happen to know where I might purchase (or how to make) the silver plant pots that are shown in Northwest #11: John's Mission Melange? There are 2 on top of his credenza (with orchids.) I love them! Thank you for your help!

We went right to the source for this one. John says,

I have a dozen of these heavy solid cast aluminum flower pots in several sizes and shapes. They were purchased at various garage sales and thrift shops over the years. None of them have a manufacturers mark on them so I can't provide any more detailed information. People who are interested in the same look could always silver leaf an ordinary flower pot. My friend Sam and I have experimented and developed our own Poor Man's silver leaf using regular kitchen foil that does the job so long as your tongue is firmly in your cheek. Step one, cover any object with watered down Elmer's glue. Step two, apply a layer of aluminum foil and press down until firmly adhered. Step three, cover with a clear coat of two-part epoxy or clear varnish. We've tried various options including cutting the foil into squares to make it look like real silver leaf, as well as crinkling the foil and then smoothing it out before applying. Cheap, easy, fun.

Why not find a great silver paint or the like and spray a terracotta pot? Aluminum is moderately expensive so solid metal pots will be a bit pricey. Zinc is a great option as well if you have some money to spend.

Rub n Buff in Silver Leaf, thinned and applied with brush over sealed (inside and out) plant pot, then cover with sealer again.

Autumn Gold looks like copper, which I have used several times. Here's an example of Autumn Gold:

I haven't tried Brush n Leaf:

Try Clement street. I have seen them there before, not sure which place but if you go into a couple of the shops there you will find them.

There is a New York-based website called Jamali Garden that has a decent assortment of silver pots & planters: http://www.jamaligarden.com/cID_4.asp

I am actually surprised that Jamali Garden hasn't been highlighted on AT SF before (or maybe I missed it?)...they have a fantastic selection of modern & earthy garden/home stuff for crazy-cheap prices.

We bought a bunch of things from them for our wedding last year & were wholly satisfied with every last bit. I just wish we had room in the house for more planters and vases and baskets and stones and everything else they sell... Their bamboo cylinder vases are just rad!! Nice, caroldede!

I thought this would be a good place to add on a couple items I found for planters, pots.

This is more of a matte silver (click on each one to see colors):

They also have steel:

These are in the U.K., quite a variety (using the brand names or keywords there, might be able to find them in the U.S.):

I just KNOW that someone will be getting some of those for indoors or outdoors. They would go so great in some of the homes we have seen in the Small, Cool contest.

Like a pair or trio behind a sofa to separate it from the dining area, or a trio at the base of a bed to separate it from the rest of a studio.

Plus, plants are great for cleaning the air.

Oh, and they would be wonderful on the small balconies that people have talked about. Wow, apparently they are all over, LOL!

For my granddaughter's dressing table, which is all about silver and crystals, I tore up small squares of aluminum foil, and rubbed them on the aforesaid watered down Elmer's glue--and I mean rubbed, hard and long. Although my tongue was in my cheek at the start, it wasn't when my jaw dropped at the results! The result looked about four or five hundred years old----

Oh, PS: I tore the foil into pieces about the size of sugar substitute packets--but all very randomly shaped. . . .

Jamali Gardens has been and continues to be featured on AT. And for good reason. :)

For our wedding decor, we bought cheap-o terracotta pots and sprayed them with a silver-effect spray paint.

West Elm has 2 clay pots similar to the ones pictured. And they are on sale with free shipping (link was too long...look under sale accessories). Spray paint is inexpensive and they will look gorgeous.
