apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Strssel Design Giveway Winner: KristinaXI

lov_small.jpgThis was a tough one. Having lived in a ground-floor apartment behind an Albertson's parking lot — complete with a dumpster and loading dock — we empathized with many of the entrants in last week's window film giveaway. (This was such a great item for Rare Device to offer to AT readers!) After much deliberation, KristinaXI's comment really got us. And she wasn't even entering for herself.

She thought the window film could help out a friend with a pervy neighbor. KristinaXI wrote: "I think these window films would be perfect for her to install on her front windows, maybe even on her bathroom window, so as to minimize the number of run-ins she has with this guy."

We hope the window film helps alleviate some of the challenges of the living situation.

And thanks again to Rare Device for participating in this giveaway!

That story gave me the creeps. By the way, does the friend also have curtains? After reading KristinaXI's post a couple of times, I can't quite figure out if the friend is wandering around naked in front of uncovered windows. If that's the case, something heftier than a window film may be in order....

Anyway, congrats! And booooo to the upstairs pervert.

Oooh, no, my friend doesn't walk around naked, but it doesn't really matter. It's definitely sketch that this guy is essentially stalking her, but it's stayed "harmless" (i.e. he hasn't ever even talked to her, or anything else remotely like that) for as long as she's lived there (going on 3 years, I think), so I think this guy is more of an annoyance than an actual physical threat.
Since it's a basement unit, the windows are wide but pretty short, and span the main room, which serves as both the kitchen/dining room and the living room, so it's a waste of fabric to buy curtains for such small windows, especially when you want to kind of divide the space into two separate areas.
Craftier people could probably get crazy really creative, but I really think this is the perfect answer - and I'll try and take pictures of her place with the lights on at night to show just how much someone could see them. I'm hoping not much.

I put in a comment for this giveaway and then I read the entries. I knew this entry would win and she totally deserves it. I hope her friend can eventually get away from that guy, but in the meantime I really hope the window film helps. She might want to consider learning self defense or getting some mace or something.

I'm all for taking more action than just putting up window film, although it's a start. He may decide he wants to do more than just look. But she should not have to give up letting light in for her safety and this attractive solution is great.
