Ellipse Mugs

2007_01_11_anthrocup1.jpgAround the world in a mug.

We noticed a stack of these lovely handled porcelain cups on a recent spin through the Anthropologie store on Market Street. What caught our eye was a diagonal strip of the white porcelain peeking out from under the dipped glaze along the bottom, a flourish that reminded us of a glazing style you see a lot in Japan. But Japanese drinking cups, as beautiful as they are, are often too small for American maws. This is the land of the Big Gulp.

Ellipse mugs, which are made in Holland, have much of the graceful simplicity of a partially dipped Japanese drinking cup, but in a more gracious size. And the glaze, a beautiful yellow, is very French and makes us think Monet at Giverny.

$12 apiece at Anthropologie.
