Last month, Aaron over at Apartment Therapy New York posted about antique factory carts used as coffee tables and occasional tables from Restoration Hardware here. A reader just sent us a tip on a source for these great, industrial pieces for a fraction of the cost...
The carts at Restoration Hardware are in the neighborhood of $900, but over at Antique Cart Coffee Tables you can purchase these old factory carts in either original condition or fully refinished starting at $400.

A refinished cart is one that has been sanded down to remove splinters and most debris, stained, and then sealed with polyurethane for a durable long lasting professional finish. All metal including cast iron casters are removed, sanded down to bare metal then a solution is applied to reveal the natural patina of the metal resulting in an elegant antique finish void of rust. Customizations, such as replacing all the nails and nuts, adding a glass top, or staining to specific hues, are also available for a higher cost.
We love the look of these industrial carts, and this is a great way to get the look at a lower cost!

I love these, but probably only for about one more second. here's hoping they don't catch on with the pottery barn crowd, because nothing ruins a good, cool thing faster than the pottery barn lemmings glomming onto it in droves.

@ splatgirl : They are already really stylish here in France, and I'm also beginning to saturate unfortunately, that and trompe l'oeil chesterfield upholstery wallpaper...I think 2009 found its new "Keep Calm and Carry on"!

Not to nitpick, but the carts actually start at $500 according to that website, not $400. I like them, and have wanted something like this for quite some time. And I wouldn't mind sanding it down myself and finishing it.

He he he. Oops. My webpage didn't fully buffer when I clicked on the link. I hit "Refresh" and suddenly that site has a MUCH larger inventory. Thank god I was wrong.

The one I bought from www.antiquefactorycartcoffeetables.com was 399. I also asked why there are two at 499 and they said that one was extremely old with rare hardware and the other was a very unique width. They also sent me several pics of slightly different types they have that are not up on their website. They even offered tips on refinishing mine. It did take some time/work to refinish it but I enjoyed personalizing it and saving.
