...I have more green going on in the rest of my apt. I have never really liked the color orange, but I do like how warm it makes the room feel. Help please! Thanks!

Ariel,
Our go-to color for curtains is white. But if you really like color, way back in '05 a NY reader named Mary made curtains that were two layers, yellow and white (check out this post and this one). We remember that they looked great (did we see them on TV, too?). We're wondering if you might like the orange with a layer of white over them to diffuse the color, but keep the warmth...
Anyone else?
I LOVE your windows. I'm seriously jealous of you.
If it were my room I would do green curtains but hang on to the orange ones. That way you can swap them out when you get tired of one color or just want a change.

I would go with sheer white linen to make the other colors in the room pop.

I like the orange because of how warm it makes the room feel, but I think it would look a lot better if you hung the curtains above the windows and had the curtains hang down outside the windows. I think that would open up the room alot.

I dont really mind either color but what is distracting me is the window peeking over the top of the curtains. May you could hange the rods higher?

I like the orange ones but there is something going on with your hardware.
I think it would look much better if you had one rod go the length of the whole bay window (mounted above the window). I think they make rods like this or you could construct something out of plumbing pipes and elbows or bent copper. This will allow you to hang the drapes between the windows when open and have more ease of closing them.

I'd go with whatever makes you happy since your bedroom should be a place you want to be. I actually really like the orange curtains, but then, I really like warm reds and oranges.... If you aren't sure about the green, you could always add some green fabric to the bottom third or so of the orange curtains to not make it so "orangey" but still keep the warmth. I'd pin the green on first at your desired length and live with it a while before making the change for good....

I don't' care for the green myself because it gives it too much of a cool under the sea look for my tastes, but my apt has an almost absurd amount of yellow in it so I'm probably not your target audience.
I really like how the orange warms it up and gives it a nice little pop of personality without being over-powering. It plays off the bed pillow and that little rug very well. Also, you might find that living with all blue-green becomes just as boring/tedious as if you were living in an all beige/white space.

I'd stick to white curtains. The windows are lovely and airy and I think the coloured drapes just detract from them. And I second getting rid of that gap above the curtain rods.

I like the orange too.
Hunt: If you can see daylight above the tops of the curtains...
...they need to be hung higher.

I like the idea of diffusing the color with a sheer white. It's also a good idea to layer your drapes if you live in a cooler climate. That way the heavier drapes keep the cold air out (if your windows leak) and in the summer they can be pushed to the side or taken down and stored for a great summer look.
I would also consider just one panel for the center window. Two panels are just too much. Also if you are not a fan of orange you could try yellow. I would stay away from green if you have it everywhere else.

I would do a forrest green like one of the green tones in your bedspread (love the beadspread by the way!) - would be warmer than the lime color curtains that are pasted on. I like the orange accents you have going on like the pillow and rug. To warm up the room maybe do a few more orange or brown accents. I like the orange curtains but it's too much competing against the strong bedspread. I can see them looking great (and warm) with a cream and orange beadspread like your accent pillow, but if you don't like orange that much to begin with I don't think you would want to go through all that just to keep the orange curtains! Good luck! We just went through 5 different colors and types of curtains in our bedroom before we agreed on a pair :)

I like the orange, but I agree with the other posters about how they are hung...looks like its sagging down in the middle.

White semi-sheer. I think the room needs more light.

I agree about the white or how about a lemony yellow like this (of course then you might need to change the bedspread to something more neutral)?

I'd completely go with white semi-sheer curtains (and yes, hang 'em higher, the room will feel more together)---that will bring in more light and more balance with the bed coverings and allow more 'pop.'

White.

I think I would put a double curtain (a double hanging rod).
Back (closer to window): Sheer blue-green
Front (closer to you): Sheer white
I think it would make the room tide together better yet not overwhelmingly colorful.

WHITE!

Maybe the writer is not allowed/doesn't want to make holes in her walls, so that's why she is using tension rods to hang her curtains.
I agree with ammanda: green would look nicer, but I would pull it from your bedspread or little rug. I think the lime green looks out of place because I don't see that color anywhere else.

White. This will make your bedroom more serene amd calmer since there is a lot going on with that bedcover and pillows.

I like the orange. Where did you get that bedspread, by the way?

I love the quilt. Is it from Anthropologie? If so, I ogled it for a while.
Go with white.

White or Yellow

i think you should try thinking for yourself. seriously? you need the aid of the internets to decide on a color curtain?

The orange seems harsh..seems to be enough orange color on the wooden floor for the warm coloring...a soft linen white or very light cream would look airy and pretty..soften the look..and the hardware needs to be 'fixed' if possible..if you can't 'nail' anything above the windows..or on the trim..try tension rods , silver, inside the windows with a lightweight drape fabric..lined for room darkening..linen is nice here.

First of all definitely move your curtain rods up toward the ceiling. If there is ornate molding...right below the moulding. If no moulding right under the ceiling. Pick a rod that will disappear and I would go with sheer linen curtains. It will make the room glow and put the focus on the architecture of the room rather that the curtains hanging there.

are you kidding? White of Course! It would open up the room and create the focus on the bed..and the architecture!

i like the orange for warmth and energy. the green is good for calming/harmony. if i kept the orange, i would take the beautiful little floor rug and put it on the white table; it gets
too lost on the similarly-colored floor and is too small. i would then put a pb flokati white rug or white wool rug, larger under part of the bed tying in the wall color. then one more pillow with the teal, green, orange white and shot of yellow in there someplace.

Those windows and moldings are too terrific to cover up with tons of fabric. I would go with a natural-fiber roman shade like this:

It'll provide privacy but allow in light. And it has a fun, casual feel.

I suggest either layering sheer white on top of a light green colour-- your bed spread is pretty bold already so I wouldn't go too dark-- OR white curtains I think that you have amazing walls and windows, and the white would definitely lighten up the room and emphasize the size of the windows.
if you are worried about putting holes in your walls... I dunno, I have done it numerous times and I have always spent some time before I moved spackling and painting. My parents own a few very, very nice houses and have rented to many people and say that it is awful when the walls are totally torn up, and especially if the tenants don't make any attempt to fix the holes, but minimal, discrete well spackled holes are ok. I'd say some curtain rods would be great.

Decide first if you want a warm/exciting or cozy/calm feel to the room. That should help you decide.

put white sheers in the middle and keep the orange to the outer windows

I would have to agree that white would look great for this beautiful room and really open up the space. On a different note, I have to say after reading this blog for a year that if readers have nothing to contribute but negative, snarky comments to posts in this fantastic community, go elsewhere.

Here's what you do: Get the green curtains for the spring/summer months when it's warm out, it'll "cool" your room down. Since you already have the orang curtains, switch them out for the fall/winter months to "warm" your room up. Color is amazing in the way it tricks the mind!
