Creative Ideas for this Unusual Find?
Good Questions

Q: I found this amazingly unique shelving unit thrown out by a local retailer recently. It's quite large, about 4' x 2.5'. When I picked it up, I had great plans for it but now that it has sat in my little (650 sq.ft.) apartment it just seems... big. Any idea what to do with it? Should I just re-toss it?

Use it as a divider for a large room! Make one side for your living room and then the other side for a home office. Such an awesome piece!

Interesting piece. I like how it has two sides of storage. Shoes on one side, pants and sweaters on the other.

it would be easier to comment if i knew what the space looked like. with that said, i'd paint it a glossy white and use it as a partial room divider. obviously it's a great piece to display books, photos and art. you could also use it as a bar. btw, it might also help to lighten its appearance by replacing the wood shelves with glass.

I think it would make an interesting plant stand, or a place store large books or record albums (if they fit in the holes).

I think its pretty rad but if you don't have the space, you don't have the space. In the right environment it would make a great room divider, like a bookshelf on one side and a dining hutch on the other. Jealous.

If you were in L.A. I would beg you to sell it to me! My husband just became self employed, turning our den into his office, this makes a super cool room divider!

yeah I think the need should determine it's use. If you don't have enough storage for serving items in your place, they would look great on at least one side of that...or maybe use it for a bar with bottles, glasses and a wine rack? Or anything anyone else has suggested.

Seems too big and bulky for the space. Sell it on craigslist--I'm certain there'll be someone out there who would love to buy it.

It really would help to see more of the place. It could make a cool headboard - turned so legs on the side are parallel to the mattress. The cool thing is it can serve one purpose on one side and a totally different purpose on the other. I would definitely paint it. Maybe even wallpaper the back of the shelves - though that looks like a heck of a job.

And how in the world did you lug that thing home? Great find, I would have snatched it too, if I had large friends with a big truck. Have fun with it :)

Wow, whatta score! It has great lines and looks very well made. I'd hang onto it. Even 'empty,' it has an almost sculptural quality.

I'd personally take off the shelving off one side, fill the holes, paint glossy white and mount my tv on the flat side, leaving the shelve side for storage for my dining room... (but then again, that'd work in my layout, you didn't tell us what your current layout is). Awesome piece, and I bet is heavy too (Jealous lol).

It's obvious to me that since you have no idea what to do with it that you really don't need it.

Sell it on Craigslist.

BEPSF

Sometimes it's not 'till you have it that you think, how could you ever have lived without it?

Imagine if someone said, a cellphone? Nobody needs it, sell the idea on Craigslist. lol The question wasn't if she needed it or not, but to give ideas... you're not giving ideas.

It's a cool piece, but if it's too big, you have to put it back out again. It's not so cool that it is worth arranging things poorly around!

A cell phone is one thing, a giant piece of unnecessary furniture is another.

Djluckyonline --

The question was "Any idea what to do with it? Should I just re-toss it?"

My input to get rid of it is as valid as yours to do whatever you suggested - Well, your initial response anyway...
...at least I wasn't criticizing anyone else for their input.

I agree - I drag home lots of stuff that looks cool, and doesn't end up fitting in my space. What did we do before we could resell stuff on Craigslist!?!? People must have had to live with their mistakes!

It looks too big for the space you have, to me. But it's perfect for someone else's space. Sometimes you can't tell if it's not right until you bring it into your rooms, and then you "feel" that it's too big, or too bulky, or something. Craigslist, Craigslist, Craigslist! (Or AT Classifieds, which target a more particular market.)

Great lines. Yeah, if you don't have a spot for it, and don't have a storage need that is crying out for a space, put it on craigslist. Someone is bound to be willing to pay to have that in their life, and you'll have a bit of extra cash.

i wonder if those shelves would fit record albums? is it sturdy enough to support that kind of weight? then you could advertise it as a record shelf!!!

Invest in heavy-duty good-looking casters with good brakes.

1) Turn one side into a home office:
You'll need a good carpenter to advise you on how to install metal bracket supports to maintain structural integrity and insure that the unit supports the weight you intend it to bear.

On one side, cut out part of the lowest shelf thusly: leave the shelf intact to either the rightmost or leftmost side and install a vertical piece so that your computer can fit inside (if you have a computer tower for a desktop -- otherwise it makes a great spot for binders, etc.) Cut out the middle set of struts above the middle shelf. This is your work space. Install an under-shelf light on the underside of the top shelf. This saves room on your work space surface. Use the top shelf for storage, printer, etc. Also, you can rest shorter shelf pieces on struts to make the upper storage more usable.

2) Turn the other side into an "eat-in kitchen" area. Modify as above. On the remaining part of the lower shelf you can store trays and cookie sheets, or folded tablecloths, dishcloths, and napkins. The middle shelf becomes your eating area. Use the upper shelf area for storage of pretty things, most likely dishes, glassware, and kitchen items.

If you put a pretty place setting on the eating side, keep that side visible when guests arrive.

Bonus round: Install an electric outlet that you can plug into a nearby wall socket so you can keep your computer/printer/light cords neat. That way, you could even keep a toaster oven on the "kitchen" side.

Am I the only person that thinks 650 sq feet is HUGE? I know it's not really the question, but my flat is a third of that size and I don't think it is especially tiny.

Ok, here's what you do:

If you're at all handy, take one half of this thing and "box it in," creating a large chiffarobe or coat closet.

On the other side, cut out all shelves except for the one at about desk level. This will be your "office," which is also conveniently divided off from the rest of the room by your sweet, sweet chiffarobe.

This is like 12 pieces of furniture in one.

i few angled pieces of plexi glass woudl make an amazing wine rack, although, if you DO toss it i will be happy to take it off your hands! LOL

(probably not a practical suggestion, but what the hell)

Do you have a cat? Because with some sisal, pads, and carpeting, that thing would make the most awesome cat napping/playing furniture ever!

I LOVE JDodit's idea of the chiffarobe/home office. The only thing different I would do is maybe put it on a lazy susan so it spins around to position it around easier, or on wheels to move it around the room. But I would DEFINITELY keep it!

Interesting bulky, odd, but strangely useful piece.... Do you have any idea what did the former owner used it for?

Someone mentioned storing clothes and shoes.... It could be a room divider with one side closet and the other media or everything else....

i agree with Djluckyonline take the shelving off one side if it's too bulky for the space. If that doesn't work for you. I would def. sell it and use the money for something that does work. sometimes we just have to let things go, no matter how cool they are.

I haven't read anyone's comments yet, but the first thing I thought of when I saw your really cool piece was a closet! If you have the room, I would put the legs on casters, and additional hooks on the outside, then fold/hang clothing items by season on either side; i.e.: the current season's clothing would be on the more accessible side, then when the seasons change, you just flip that side to the back by rolling it in a circle. Seems easy enough! Good luck. :)

As much as I love it and want it, I've decided to sell it on Craigslist. It has been in my living room for a month now and I can't look at it anymore. All were such good suggestions but I don't think it's going to work here. Any one in Nashville want it? Let me know virginia.straub@gmail.com
