I've had my eye on the Tillary for a while and have been mulling over the idea of buying one (it looks and feels really nice in person), but can't decide if it will be comfortable enough to lounge on while watching tv. I'm also wondering whether those pillows will truly stay in place (the back of the couch would be against a wall, but I'd like to have the flexibility to move the pillows and still rest against them) . Does anybody have this sofa? Feedback?

Have you considered finding the foam from a supplier and making your own? You can buy various densities of foam to your taste and, I hate to say assume, but I assume it would be much cheaper than the $150/whack that west elm wants.

I don't have this sofa - but when I was younger we had an almost identical sofa/daybed in our basement that was some sort of relic from my dad's college days. Although it was an pristine condition (no sagging springs or anything like that), it was NOT a comfortable set up for lounging. The angular foam cushions are not ideal for creating a cushy relaxation zone. It was comfortable for about 30 minutes worth of reading. Unless the foam in these cushions is substantially softer, I would assume you would encounter a similar situation-- and I don't imagine you could get this kind of crisp shape without a very firm cushion. Why is it always so challenging to find furniture that looks *and* feels good?

Well, considering that these are not just pillows but oddly-shaped upholstered cushions...
...and that anything comparable that's custom-made is going to cost far more - $300 for a pair is a fair retail price.

my aunt had a daybed back in the '70s with these kind of cushions on them. you probably should try generic home goods sites.

I wouldn't try to DIY this (and I DIY everything!) Unless you find a miraculously cheap foam supplier, you're going to spend a lot of money to get a couple of long pieces that are 12x12. Most of of the retail places I've seen don't keep anything thicker than 6 inch in stock, and many online suppliers say that for anything above 6 inches they require that you contact them for custom pricing. Add in that you want the high quality firm foam that will give firm back support, and you're going to pay close to what those two retail for. Then you need an electric knife to cut it on the angle like that, and the cost of the fabric...it adds up.

the cushions on the tillary sofa are also weighted so that they don't slide off or flop about when lounging.

The pillows on the house tour look like the triangular Thai pillows. I brought back two smaller ones from Bangkok a few years ago, just to find them being used at every Osha Thai around the city. Maybe you could ask them where to get one?

J.C. Penney's catalog use to carry foam bolsters and covers for them in a variety of colors, I have some in a cheery cherry red over placed on a khaki comforter against which I have several plaid pillows. Since I am short this arrangement is too deep for comfort but then most sofas are also too deep for comfort. It was far more comfortable with a 30 inch mattress which can still be had on special order.

I've ordered a lot from foamorder.com. Their customer service is great, and every custom-size and custom-firm piece arrived quickly and exactly as ordered. One thing to keep in mind is to order the bolsters just a little shorter overall than the back of your bed; I didn't do this for my daybed and by the time the custom covers were put on, they extended past the edge on both sides. The upholstery fabric we used was textured and kind of thick, so that made a difference.

I own the west elm couch and i love it. i have spent plenty nights sleeping on it under my skylights. my only complaint was that with the straight cushion they would slide back as u were seated unless up against the wall to fix that i bought the corner cushion. i plan on buying another one for my guest room / office. too bad your not in the DC area cause i have no use for the straight cushion backs that come with the couch.

I'm planning to do the same thing with some compact floor-seating cushions that are sold in a shop near me. They'll provide a back to my single bed futon, and in a pinch when my friends want to sit on the floor they can use them too. (Removable covers will be involved.)
