Q: I absolutely LOVE this bookcase and have been trying to find something like this for awhile – a book or display case type solution that doesn’t look like any other standard bookcase. Can any of your readers ID this particular unit or suggest any others very similar to it?

Editor: Aaron (NY Managing Editor) tracked it down. He says: Your image comes from Phoebe Howard's blog and that particular design was available from her shop as of May last year ($6,500). You can see similar design on the same post: Mrs. Howard Personal Shopper | Etageres and Bookcases.
Does anyone know of a source for something similar? Please let us know in the comments below...thanks!

Mecox Gardens sells some lovely gold-leaf bookshelves (it looks to me like the one in your photo is gold-leaf, but I could be wrong). There's nothing in the same shape as the one in the photo, but some do have interesting or unusual shapes.

Or this is a great unusual book case DIY:

It looks like a more sophisticated Jonathan Adler - try his shop.

Nice self-promotion of your own blog MODERnestS, but your links don't have anything to do with that the poster was asking.

Sorry, can't make any recommendations but I'll bet if you send this to Williams-Sonoma you'll see a knock-off in West Elm in no time. :)

I'm pretty sure this is brass, rather than gold leaf. You can find some terrific brass items at the very high end, but I haven't seen any so far on the "other" end. I'd keep an eye out for something vintage.
I'm really in love with that matte finish on this piece. Hard to come by. There is a plethora of the polished brass stuff out there from the 80s... I've heard that you can use acetone to remove the shiny protective coating. Anyone know? Note that I tried this with some brass hinges -- it had no effect. I soaked them in acetone and nothing happened.

Wow, I just checked out Howards site, very nice stuff, not exactly my style, but she's talented for sure.

editor: that's amazing that aaron tracked this down! please do thank him many times over for me, i am forever indebted.
on another note (and for everyone else's suggestions), i definitely agree that there aren't many on on the middle end of the price spectrum that have this brass or gold-leaf finish (and minimal footprint), and the ones i have found (minus the pattern) have run in the thousands - too rich for my blood.

I just found this Shelving Chair by Jun Murakoshi:

I like the look of the three chairs together when they make a shelf.
