Dear AT,
Do you know where one could find really good quality used file cabinets? I'm coveting a nice set of 4-drawer Art Deco Steelcase ones, or something similar from the time before computers, when they couldn't make paper fast enough to keep up with booming business (and bureaucracy!)
Bonus points if the store in question will a) refinish to order (I'm thinking gloss Chinese red or the suddenly omnipresent lime green) can b) deliver said refinished cabinets and is c) located in the East Bay or will deliver to the East Bay.
Thanks!
Jonathan

Ok, I just took a look at the website of the company listed above and I'll give them credit yet the prices are astoundingly high!!
Seriously you can peruse Craigslist and find a never-ending supply of old steel furniture (at least in chicago). There are also several liquidators around town (chicago) who basically give this stuff away...
Make a project of refinishing one yourself and you'll save alot of bread and have a great story to boot!
The San Pablo Flea Market in Oakland carries a lot of Steelcase (and other makers) office furniture. Their selection is hit or miss, but they have good prices and they like to bargain. They store most of their inventory outside so head there before the rainy season starts.
I know when I bought my office chairs from them they recommended someone who would sandblast and repaint them (I don't remember where, but look in the yellow pages for sandblasting).

Julian, how would one go about refinishing a file cabinet oneself? Is it a sanding project, or does it involve chemical strippers?
A little tip from the midwest: Steelcase and Hayworth both have warehouse/outlet stores, where you can buy one-off merchandise. It's all new, but the catch is that they might be in weird colors, such as the Aeron in salmon pink or, yes, maybe, filing cabinets in lime green. Both are located near Grand Rapids, Michigan and -- true bonus item here -- Continental airlines used to run a cheap daily 9 a.m./5p.m. RT from LaGuardia to GR. Not sure how often that flight is offered, however, as I haven't done the NYC-mid-Michigan day trips in some time.
Just sand and spray paint with Krylon. Easy.

Hi Jonathan,
I have a 4 drawer steelage that I've been considering letting go of. If you go to pastpresentfuture.net and go to the quick guide mine looks like the third one in that 1st row of pictures, but it's darkish gray, not green. I live in Washington heights and you'd have to come get it...$100? I think twojakes.com would paint it any color, and they're in brooklyn (but they may also have just what you want!).
Oh, how I love the old metal furniture...
