apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Good Questions: Affordable Hardware Resources?

7-28-hardware.jpgDear AT, I'm moving into a new place that has a ton of storage. Which is great for, well, storing stuff. But the bad news is that the cabinets currently have knobs and pulls that are not my style. Okay, some of it doesn't even have a style -- like the photo I've included of the closet...

...So I need help. Does anyone have recommendations for affordable hardware resources -- either online or in the Bay Area?

Thanks!

-Anh-Minh

I hate to say it, but IKEA does have some decent hardware for reasonable prices.

Lowes also has some ok stuff. For more upscale there's Bauerware, in the castro.

Hafele has some good options- www.hafele.com. They're a go to place for any architectural hardware- also have great selection of hinges and other strange pieces to help with organization.

I shopped at the big box stores and took down brand names, model numbers, etc... and then shopped on the internet and often found the same thing or something similar for less. I also found some pulls I love at a very decent price at Target of all places.

Ok, so in this picture alone I count 21 handles/drawer pulls, and you say you have more! What's your budget?!?

In a situation like this, I would mix high with low. Maybe some gorgeous Anthropologie pulls, but only on the top 3 drawers, and then basic metal pulls on the lower 4 banks of drawers. I think you could do this bank of cabinets for $150 if you went that route

When I was in the market for glass knobs, I found ebay to be the best place to look. You should be able to find vintage-looking glass knobs for about $1.50 each. IKEA and the other big-boxes are good places to look for the cheapies, too.

Also, be mindful of the holes left from the old handles. You may be limited to styles based on the distance between the holes (if you intend to reuse) or be prepared to spackle and paint all those holes and drill new ones.

Agree, accent knobs are your friend, get cool knobs for one type of pull and innocious coordinating ones for the rest.

That IS a good price on those chain pulls.

You didn't say what your style IS but would there be anything found that you could MAKE pulls with?
wood, leather?
I'd go room by room and only worry about coordinating each area that way you don't go insane trying to find 75 knobs that all coordinate perfectly.

Thanks for the suggestions!

folara - I hadn't even considered mixing styles, but totally think I'm going to go that route. (And, um, there are way more knobs that need to be replaced in the kitchen.)

reb - Good point! I'm going to try to use the holes that are already there.

DahliaCactus - I'd like to keep all of the knobs and pulls in the house simple, modern and clean -- nothing ornate, but nothing that looks too cheapie/bland either. And yes, I think I have to take it one room at a time. Otherwise, I'm going to go crazy.

I got just the handles I wanted for my kitchen at Target. And I didn't settle. I couldn't find anything as perfect anywhere else. For the bin pulls for the lower drawers, I found the perfect thing at Home Depot. I'm going to splurge on two interesting pulls from Klaff's (http://www.klaffs.com/store_hours.html) (Norwalk Westport and Danbury, CT) for under the cook top.

I also just found some very nice knobs at Target - and they have some that are super affordable, something like $15 for a package of 10.

i promise, i have no affiliation with R&B ! i've used these knobs on 3 pieces of my furniture, and i'm always asked for the source. if the handles are not the correct length, you could use 2 knobs for an interesting look.

more options below, but above is my choice...

This seems pretty inoffensive to me, and it's INSIDE a closet?

What about spray painting the handles?

I recently placed an order from this place: http://www.dlawlesshardware.com/
because a particular non mortise hinge I've been searching for was 1/4 the price as other stores. If you can find something there you like, I'd highly recommend their service & speed of shipping (free with $50).

Ikea is a terrific resource but I have also bought pulls and knobs off ebay as well... while this might not be your style here is a good deal:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Amerock-Cabinet-Drawer-Pulls-Handles-LOT-of-25-Silver_W0QQitemZ300244624052QQihZ020QQcategoryZ41975QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Sometimes you can contact the sellers directly as well for a volume discount.

I bought an entire sealed box of brushed nickle pulls from Williams Sonoma on ebay for $25 $8 shipping. Search "knob lot" or "drawer handle lot" on ebay.
