Good Questions: Are these quality designer knockoffs?

2006_10_25_noguchi-table.jpgHello AT,

I am wondering if anyone has purchased anything from Advanced Interior Designs based in San Francisco? I am in Seattle so I can't personally visit the warehouse to inspect the quality of these replicas.

I know many AT readers are against designer copies but for those of us with very small budgets this is like a dream come true! Can anyone attest to the quality of these pieces?

KG from Seattle

Isn't there something ironical in Jackie (the original one) wanting a copy?

I bought 2 Barcelona Chairs and 3 Eileen Gray Tables from them and they are all Alphaville Design pieces which are all very good quality reproductions that are usually sold at a much higher markup. I think they sell cheaper Barcelona chairs as well so make sure to ask for the provenance of the items you are looking at. Anyways I think they are very nice, customer-focused people. They post ads on SF's craigslist pretty regularly that are even cheaper than their website. If you contact Jasmine directly through email you might get a better price:

I think that if you are buying the noguchi table pictured, then you should be able to tell if it is good quality after a cursory inspection.... i mean it's just 2 pieces of wood and a sheet of glass.... what is there really to skimp on?

With the real piece, you are just paying for the rights.... which aren't going to the designer because he is dead.

I think I would really inspect a piece of knock off uphostery.... but wood and glass should be pretty fail safe.

Actually I just got one a month ago. The shipping was problem free, they really packed well (I live in LA).

The glass is beautiful and a full 3/4" thick. I did notice that the finish on the wood is quite thin and easily scratched (I did while lifing the 100 pound glass up there). I'm happy, the price is right and the look is great.

So Lucie: Where did you get it? Because I want one and am not going to pay for the real thing.

i actually took a look at the eames lounge chair and decided against buying it. visually, they looked great and hard to tell apart from an original. after some detailed inspection, i noticed two things: first, the paint finish was quite thin. the product i inspected was new (out of the box) and noticed one small scratch on it. secondly, the size of the product is not an exact match. for the lounge chair, i noticed that the seat depth was about 2 inches too short - a big deal for something that's so small to begin with.

jasmine was very nice and helpful tho. the prices are great but just don't expect it to be an exact reproduction in size and finish. hope that help!

I just took a look around the site and the Eames-Style Managemnt office chairs look like they would fit perfectly in my home office. Does anyone have any experience with this product? With a reproduction style table or desk I wouldn't mind too much since its just wood and glass, but with an office chair, I guess ther's just more room for substandard construction. Any comments? That pricepoint is extremely tempting though! All the other office type chairs I've seen in that pricepoint just don't do naything for me.

I bought 2 office chairs a few months ago, and they are great. Of course it is vinyl and not leather and some details here and there, but overall great, and sturdy.
I decided to buy an eames lounge chair in walnut, and looks awesome.
Jasmine is super nice and i will keep buying from them.

I love their stuff and they are very personable to deal with.
The quality is high for Knockoffs.

Noguchi is dead, but that doesn't mean that someone else hasn't bought those rights or that the proceeds don't go to something worthwhile...

It all depends on why you buy furniture as to whether you should get the original or not. If you only want the look, then who cares. If you compare the copy to the original, the copy will have different dimensions than the original. You have to decide if those new dimensions are pleasant to your eye. A friend of mine said he could NEVER feel good about himself with knock-off furniture...and he shamed me into buying original pieces...

But I think it's all about getting good deals and not giving in to instant gratification. If you wait and save and find a good deal, your patience will be rewarded and you'll have a store of value. If you buy cheap knock-offs (or even not so cheap knock-offs) then you fill your house with junk, but then maybe you have money for other stuff.

It's all subjective and you should buy what's right for you. In terms of quality, you mostly get less than what you pay for in the mass-produced furniture business.

I don't think having a knock-off Noguchi Table is necessarily a horrible thing, but isn't the knock off still like $700? If you're going to spend that kind of scratch, why not just save up, and wait 'til the DWR 10% off sale in the spring? Then you'd have the real deal.

:)

If you know an interior designer, they can usually get these original pieces cheaper than retail prices. Currently, the Noguchi table is in the DWR catalog for $1195, and that doesn't include tax and shipping. I hired a decorator who got me the original piece for $928, including tax and shipping.

Also, as far as resale goes, if you get tired of the piece down the line you will obviously get a higher price for the original as opposed to a knockoff.

I would like to share my great experience with Advanced
Interior Designs! I have moved my office and ordered 12 Eames-style management chairs from them with a specified delivery date to LA. They were very prompt in communicating and have shipped my order to arrive exactly on the date requested. They have the best prices for office chairs and office furniture, I have searched a lot!

I would highly recommend doing business with them! Their website is www.advancedinteriordesigns.com.

This reminds me of people that sell fake Rolex watches, etc. ad nauseum.

Very good quality merchandize, I bought a Noguchi table and Barcelona chair, there is almost no difference with original. Very happy!

Maybe I'm being cynical, but all these overwhelmingly positive reviews from folks with unlinkable names strike me as a little suspicious. Apartment Therapy, can you determine that they are all from unique sources (IPs)?

has anyone bought one of their Corbusier sofas or armchairs? how is the workmanship? is it really Aniline dyed leather? are they comfortable?
