Good Questions: Bigger Version of the West Elm Cable Rug?

2007_03_13_westelm.jpgHi AT,

I'm trying to find a rug like the West Elm Cable Rug, but in a 9' x 12' version. Can you all help?

Hi James,

The only felted wool shag rug we know of that comes that big is from Pottery Barn. Their Quinn Felted Shag Rug comes as large as 9'x12' and costs $1,149 at that grand size.

Anyone else?

Pottery barn sells a great felted shag rug in the 9x12 size. I've seen this on sale on occasion, if the price is a concern. I own the 5x8 version and am crazy about it. Good luck with your search.

Pottery Barn also has a looped rug (called the "Popcorn Rug") with a similar look that's available in a 9x12, also for $1,149. (We have the Quinn, and it sheds like CRAZY -- maybe the Popcorn sheds less?)

If $1,149 is too steep, try eBay. We bought ours brand new on eBay for about half the regular price, including shipping. (A lot of folks live near Pottery Barn/Crate & Barrel/West Elm outlet stores, and make their livelihoods reselling brand-new clearance items and catalog returns on eBay -- truly, there are lots of great deals on new, brand-name items to be had there.)

You could also visit a wall-to-wall carpet showroom -- or better yet, a remnant retailer. (There's one in San Rafael on the way to the Marin dump. I can't remember what it's called, tho.) Choose a wool shag with the look you want, order a 9x12 piece, and have them bind the edges.

Good luck!

True, this type of rug sheds a lot more compared to other more tightly knotted wool rugs, especially when brand new. My shag rug is 2 years old and the shedding has reduced significantly over time.

i would be really really REALLY careful about this. as other posters have noted above, these rugs have the tendency to shed. i had the west elm cable rug in 8x10 for a few months before i absolutely had to take it back. i loved the way it looked, but the shedding was insane. i vacuumed daily, to no avail... i was literally covered in gray fuzz all the time.

although the shedding may lessen with time, it was unbearable for the months that i had the rug. and trust me when i say that i'm hardly a neat freak... just be very careful, and make sure wherever you get the rug has a good return policy.

First, let me tell you that I like the look of the updated and chucky style shag rugs especially in combination with modern and contemporary furniture but I would join others to warn you about shedding issue.

Actually I am glad to hear that others have shed issues as well. I purchased Lounge Shag Rug from CB2.com and like look of it but it does shed a lot. While mine is fairly new and will probably start to shed less as it age it is annoying to clean non-stop around it, not to mention that you cannot step on it (especially in something dark colored) without looking like shaggy/poodle dog 

Beware of the terrible terrible shedding of the West Elm rug:

It drives me crazy.

How about buying two smaller ones and having them professionally bound together? Or taking the picture to one of the local rug outlets and seeing what they have? You'd be surprised at the remnants they have these days (many with more modern textures), some are the size of double rooms, and they can cut and finish it to your specs.

Far more expensive, but positively exquisit, is the Berber carpet. It's so soft and squishy, it's like a dream. And it comes in far less boring colors. And in a 9x12 size.

You can see it in person at Propeller on Hayes.

A neighbor has the West Elm version and I needed a larger rug so I opted for the Pottery Barn version at the higher cost. I had to return two (2!) of the Pottery Barn rugs because of damage during shipping. Pottery barn was nice and refunded me fully but they ship regular ups and my local delivery guy was pissed at having to lug huge, heavy rolls back and forth twice.

I later found it at a local rug manufacturer (in Los Angeles) for less money and it's higher quality than West Elm or Pottery Barn. I have only light shedding and I'm glad I didn't give up because I really like this rug.

DON'T BUY THE POTTERY BARN RUG!!!

I don't have time to find the link on this site, but i think it is entitled "why does my rug smell". Please read it!!!

There were many people who reported that their pottery barn rug started to smell like burnt rubber. Mine did also. The rug made my bedroom smell so bad it made my eyes water. Luckily, I was able to return it to Pottery Barn for a merchandise credit, even though I did not have a receipt.

Again, please don't buy the Pottery Barn tufted wool rug. You will regret it.

Good luck,
Rich

Okay, I found the thread on the New York Apartment therapy sight.

Here is the link. It is a must read for anyone buying a rug.

Cheers,

RugRat, do you remember the name/location of the manufacturer in L.A.? I'm in L.A. and looking for a few good rugs.

Cheers!

Oh my GOD!! That potterybarn rug thread is scary!!

I loev my ikea shag rug but the shedding is constant. I've had it a couple of months and it has reduced signifigantly, but I still ahve to run the dust vac through the villa a couple times a week. I want to get another better quality rug to change the look a couple times a year since my sofa is slipcovered (Room & Board Jasper Sofa) and I was contemplating on getting the West Elm Felted Wool that they have.

Forget the wool shag, it sheds and soaks up stains like a qtip dipped into grape juice. The most interesting rugs IMHO are the new breed of art silk shag, or non-shedding acrylic shag (acrylic interspersed with viscose). They are incredibly soft and feature a thick, deep pile for added comfort and warmth. They're all the rage in the EU. I've found small versions in the states, but nothing bigger than about 5x7. I'm still looking :)

I love this rug and would like own it in the grey. I got it in ivory within the past six months at tuseday morning. yes, it sheds terrifically but a bagless vaccum works wonders. i read somewhere where a guy got a 'furmantor' from the pet store and it worked well.
