Good Questions: Can this sleigh bed go mod?

2006_12_07_sleigh.jpgHello AT,

Is there any way to make this bed look more modern or contempary?

Thanks,
Natasha

Hi Natasha,

Tall order, but not impossible!

We'd try painting the whole bed frame (incluing the metalwork on the headboard and footboard) white and then dessing the bed simply, in a neutral palette, to move it towards a more modern, minimal look. Think of a loft or gallery space: with all the architectural details painted the same shade as the walls, the room quiets down and becomes a canvas for other things. Treated similarly the detail work on your bed won't disappear, but it will lose visual importance.

Any other takes on this out there?

maybe if you completely discarded the "vine" but other than that...im with anne...no..

unless you want quiry instead of contempo/mod..

you could paint the entire bed some funky color even the viney looking things...

then you would have super quirky..funky lol

you could upholster it if you still wanted to utilize the frame - cheaper solution potentially to buying a new headboard/footboard.

Of course. With a little imagination and some luck. I would try removing the vine part and painting the wood portion. Take a look at olystudio.com and take some inspiration from there beds. Think of a theme along the lines of updated country modern. Its worth a go. Maybe an enamel white wood frame, with an antiqued silver vines.

I think I saw a segment on HGTV where they slip covered a frame exactly like this one. It looked nice with clean lines. The cover was made by one of the segment hosts so if you were able you could DIY or look on Craigs List for a seamstress.

I would paint the whole thing a matte black color! I saw some cool picture frames with that treatment and in their (I imagine) native gold they looked pretty horrendous but in matte black (or white) they looked cool.

Okay, check out "My Brother's Frame":

how about covering the vines with an upholstered section and leaving the wood part exposed.

I think it would look GREAT painted a matte black like chuck said - use your imagination people!Maybe a shade darker or lighter than the wall color behind it would really be cool too! I don't know how to paint onto metal and wood though that wouldn't start to flake off - i guess enameled spray paints or use a primer than paint it?

I had the same thougth: matte black! Does oil-based paint come in matte? Because I would use oil-based for durability.

here's another contempo idea: paint the bed white or light grey (strip the varnish off & prime it 1st). at the very least do a cerused finish over the natural wood color. remove the leafy vines completely and get a strip of acrylic, resin or polyethylene (clear or white) cut to fit in the rectangular space where the vines once were. if you can't remove the vines, perhaps there's is enough room to just cover them up with the acrylic/polyethylene panels?

whew-a tough one. hmmm... check this out:

paint the entire thing gloss-white...paint all of your odds n' ends furniture (side tables etc) white as well so that they become shapes-only and remove the color/textures. Then... add a really punchy color (deep magenta, olive green or dark cerulean blue with maybe some white/chocolate accents) as an accent (pillows, or bedspread etc) on top of a chocolate brown area rug (depending upon your floors of course.) A large drum hanging pendant lamp as well as a few glass-blown base ones in your accent colors with white drum shade...keep the room devoid of clutter & any small knick knacks...blow up a fav color-saturated photo to about 30 X 30 for above the bed...really closely cropped to almost abstract (i have lots if you need one!)

And...

Voila! Your new 'mod' room.

This is what I would try for a funky modern eclectic look:
Paint it citrus yellow, cobalt blue, or some other unexpected accent colour. Dress with white or neutral (maybe grey?) linens. Make sure that other furniture in the room is neutral-coloured and has modern, clean lines. Keep window treatments, etc. clean-looking too.

First thought is no.

But white lacquer (glossy) would look more updated than black matte.

NO

I have one nobody has mentioned yet. Get the pieces nice and clean and looking perfect as they are THEN have each encased in a solid slab of clear acrylic resin.

Is your goal "modern" or "up-to-date"?

If it's "up-to-date," you're fine: go with any of the suggestions to paint the whole frame in a single color. That will make the bed more sculptural and less... what it is. White or black would be straight neo-Baroque; a bright, glossy color would be a more Hollywood Regency take on the trend. Then either do bedding with a very stylized vine pattern in the exact color of the bed, or go ultra-luxe with satins and plushes.

If you're after "modern" in the clean-lined, mid-century sense... sell this bed and buy what you really like.

Wende in phoenix said it perfectly. You can go neo-Baroque with this bed (ala Brocade Home) but that's as modern as you can take it. Could look nice with a jet black chandelier and otherwise simple modern decor.

Tough call on this one. The simplest thing would be to paint the entire thing glossy white and as Lisa said, dress the bed in a neutral palette -- I'm thinking white, sand, and maybe a tiny bit of milk chocolate. An additional step would be to paint the wall behind the bed bright white, so the scrollwork fades into the wall and isn't so noticeable as it is against the presently green walls.

Maybe like others were saying, paint the enitre frame a matte black, and remove the vine things. THEN maybe replace the vine thingys with large sheets of tin or other inexpensive, yet modern looking metal, cut to fit the rectangular openings. I think thats what I would do.
