Good Questions: Chair Fixer and Reupholsterer in One?

2007_05_02_gq1.jpg

Hello AT,

I have a bucket swivel chair that is both broken and needs to be reupholstered. The chair has completely broken off its wooden base.
I am looking for someone in San Francisco that can fix and reupholster my poor chair. Any thoughts?

Thank you,

Hi Brynn,

We can point you to a recent post where you'll find some reader recs for upholsterers, and these would be a good place to start.

Other leads for Brynn?

Brynn,

What a cool looking chair. No wonder you want to fix it!

I can't help you with Bay Area upholsterers but here in Portland, the guy I think is the absolute best is "Rose City Upholstery" and he works with an *amazing* wood repair guy.

I'm sure you don't want to drive all that way to have a chair fixed, but maybe you can call Ray at Rose City Upholstery and see if he can recommend someone of his caliber near you. You never know, it could be worth a shot.

Tell him "the chair guy" sent you...he's restored a few pieces for me.

I would recommend going to Kroll on 14th Street by Office Depot and Best Buy. They are not cheap, but the chair will look better than new once it is done. They also sell fabric as well. I have worked with them for years and they never dissapoint. they also have a great collection of furniture as well as custom upholstery. They reupholstered some Brno chairs for me and replaced the webbing, foam, dacron, etc. The cost was about $400 each not including the fabric I provided. Not cheap, but they look fantastic and sit even better.

There are also a lot of upholstery shops down 17th street close to the Mission. I have never used any of them, but if you drive down 17th you will see a few and it might be worth stopping in and bring the chair for a quote. For a really top notch job with a reasonably priced fabric (under $50/yd) you can expect to pay between about $300 and $800. A lot will depend on how bad off the base is, if you want the wood refinished as well as if the insides need to be replaced, which it probably should be.

Good Luck,

George
