Hey AT, My boyfriend and I are moving into a new apartment--we're thrilled, but have some decorating concerns. To the left of the wall/hallway in this picture is a wall of blah-brown doors which I would like to cover
up with long, panel curtains. The question is, what color should I make them?...
...The color on the walls cannot change; I would prefer if something could work with the couch pictured, too. Neutrals are fine, but I am not afraid of color. Any suggestions? Thanks,
-Marilyn

What about doing another tone of the wall color but in a contrasting texture? Like something very nubby and heavy like upholstery grade fabric?

Garrett, try reposting with more info. What else is will go in the area? Furnishing textures - wood? metal? glass? Do you like high or low contrast? Do you need to keep things light or do you prefer dark? Etc.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys--I wasn't thinking much about texture, previously. I love the idea of red and purple!

I was just addressing the curtains like the post said. But, like I said, match them to the wall to keep the space more open. Think nubby orange heavy fabric. If you plan on tying them back you could do it in another fabric of the same color, like a matching orange velvet tieback would be nice. Then I would personally keep the pallet limited to purple, orange, and white. I think the couch looks kind of "comfy" so I would embrace that with many different patterned cushions in purple, white, and orange prints. A high gloss white coffee table would be fun and easy to find. It's really hard to say much more than that without seeing more of the room. But it's safe to say if the walls are orange the space is going to have to embrace a bit of "fun".

A couple thoughts:
1. I like the nubby fabric idea - an olive-green colored linen
2. A red - like the Toulouse Lautrec combination seen here: http://www.popartuk.com/art/toulouse-lautrec/ambassadeurs-st2769-poster.asp
and here: http://flickr.com/photos/11667842@N05/2122421948 in a matte fabric
3. another shade of the purple - a silvered lavender (as here http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/sf/inspiration/inspiration-lavender-tiles-064149) or super deep (almost black) in a heavy velvet (Maybe a silvered lavender with the darker purple trim) or demi-matte fabric
