Good Questions: Custom Cushions for this Sofa?

2007_05_08_sofa.jpg
Hi AT,

I was just given a sofa frame much like the one in the picture (which is for sale at retro@home). But the cushions on mine are both ugly and uncomfortable. So I'm wondering:

a) Can I have actually comfortable cushions made for a couch like this? Like "laying on it for hours reading" comfortable, not "it's a nice futon" comfortable? And upholstered for less than just buying a new couch?

b) Does anyone know where this could happen locally?

Just before coming into this couch I had pretty much decided on buying the Petrie (I know, me and everyone else) but it was comfortable, a looker, and I could afford it (just). So I don't have tons of money to throw at this thing, nor do I want a couch frame sitting bare in my studio for forever!

Any and all help much appreciated!

Thanks,
Jennifer in SF

Dear Jennifer,

We think that this project can definitely be accomplished for less than the cost of the Petrie!

There's a local business called Foamorder.com that will cut custom foam cushions to your specs and wrap them in Dacron. You can keep costs down by opting for one of the less dense types of foam (they have seven kinds), but we wouldn't place bets on their long-term durability.

As for custom cushion covers, Foamorder will do that as well, but your fabric choices will be limited. We know a local seamstress named Rebecca Shannon (415.861.6476) who does great work out of her home at reasonable rates. Scoring your upholstery fabric on sale (you can often find great remnants from high-end fabric sources like Maharam on eBay) can help you stick to a budget.

Anyone else?

Thanks for answering this! I just bought a very similar couch on eBay and it definitely needs new cushions.

Although I haven't ordered from them myself http://www.fabricguru.com has really great prices on upholstery fabrics. My advice is don't cheap out on the foam and batting options, you'll spend a little more and have a much nicer sofa.

try contacting one of the custom sofa places that have been recommended on here before (gingko, bayareasofas.com, etc). many of them will make custom replacement cushions as well.

there are 2 upholstery companies side by side at 17th and Doloroes in the Mission- both jam pakced busy and in business for years. I'm sure they could do whatever you're looking for...
good luck!
