Good Questions: Decorating on the cheap in SF

2007_01_19_MN3.jpgHi AT,

We are moving to a two-bedroom rental from a one-bedroom rental. We need a new dresser, night stands , bookshelves and all the works.

Which are the best thrift/antique stores in and around San Francisco to buy furniture. I am sending a couple of pictures - one of the bedroom and one of the living room. [pics after the jump]

Note: Include a pic of your problem and your question gets posted first.

Also, where can I find window panels (natural material only - silk, cotton, linen, bamboo) for cheap? Since I am renting, I do not want to spend a lot of money on them.

Thanks a lot,
MN

Anyone??

If you can sew , I like the Fabric Discount Store on 4th street / Bryant in SF.
The Insiders Outlet In Emeryville has sometimes good curtain panels, hit or miss.
For furniture the Valencia corridor from 16th street to 21st street is pretty cool.
Craig's list is my favorite as well.
Good Luck,
Sylvia

Ebay is best. Craigslist has great deals. Past Perfect on Union Street and the one on Fillmore for furniture- sort of expensive but huge warehouses; Antique Trove in San Carlos, again, huge warehouse; Room and Board; Alameda Flea market - happens next weekend, here's the link: http://www.antiquesbybay.com/

re the window panels, I've actually found that IKEA has some cheap window treatments. They won't last forever, and they're generally made for windows of pretty conventional sizes, but it's worth checking into just because they're pretty inexpensive.

For windows, head to the fabric outlet in the brick building at 4th & Bryant (mentioned above), I got a nubby raw silk for $3 a yard and used iron-tape from the fabric store to make hems (instead of sewing). Each panel cost me <$10 when done. For bedding, I took the plain white extra long linen panels from IKEA (very inexpensive), and dyed them a pale aqua at home using RIT Dyes and the same could be done for window treatments.

For furniture, the shops on Valencia are particularly good if you comb them regularly, but I'm really enjoying the flea markets (Alameda and Alemany). I've bought some amazing things on Craigslist (especially the ads from this website because it makes it so much easier to find great things... the searching is already done for you).

Above all, have fun with it, and don't settle (love what you buy!).

continued (weird it cutout part of the message)...

Each panel cost me <$10. For another room I bought the plain white linen window panels from IKEA (very inexpensive) and dyed them a pale aqua at home using RIT Dyes. I even used them to make the bedding for the room.

continued... sorry, figured out why it's truncating.

Each panel cost me less than 10 dollars (and in silk). For another room I bought the plain white linen drapery panels from IKEA, very inexpensive, and dyed them aqua at home using RIT Dyes. I used the fabric both for the windows and for the bedding in the room.

Good luck!

Also, Oakland Museum's annual White Elephant Sale- a massive warehouse of everything conceivable (and well organized!). Famous for its amazing-ness.

March 3rd and 4th. Also this Sunday, as a pay-for-admission preview sale. $12.50 ahead of time, $15 at the door.

ListPic makes browsing Craigslist a whole lot easier, by showing you all the photos:

Also: funky used stuff at The Apartment (18th, east of Valencia).

Also, don't know the name: cool mid-century vintage on Valencia just north of 15th.

There is a huge salvation army in Chinatown near Jack London Square that is the hub that all their furniture runs though before it is distributed. I've had good luck there.
