Hi AT,
I finally found a great sofa on craigslist (yay!) but it has a musty smell to it (boo!). It's not a bad or weird smell. It's just been sitting in someone else's house for the past 3 years and has absorbed the *smell* of the house. Do you have any suggestions on companies that do upholstery cleaning? Or maybe even a home cleaning method? The sofa is microsuede and the tag says to only use water-based cleaners. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks AT!

Debbie, try
febreeze, it has worked for me for wet dog smell... test on a spot you can't see, for color fastness.
I wonder if you could cover the sofa with baking soda overnight, then vacuum it off in the morning. That might help to reduce or eliminate the smell. Cheap too, and doesn't leave behind a scent of its own.
pc, I've tried febreeze but it doesn't seem to help. and I did think of the baking soda/vacuuming idea but wasn't sure if I'd regret it later. I had images of blotches in my cushions that I woulnd't be able to get out. Maybe I can do a test and try it on one cushion.
Does anyone know of any good upholstery cleaning companies? I'm thinking that a thorough steam cleaning would be good just to get all the allergens out.

Is the underside upholstered? Try that first, or maybe a side of the cushion you don't normally see.
Just don't do it while it's really damp. If the baking soda stays dry it should be easier to get it out.
There is a product called zeropetodor , sold at zeropetodor.com, and this stuff will take any smell, ANY smell out for for good. It is simply the best and nothing else works as well. This product will save your sanity if you are a pet owner. And it works just as well on others stinks too- try it and you will never have a problem again..
I can tell you from experience that when a cat horks on a white carpet 30 minutes before a party and you do not panic-THAT is how good this product is.
I can't stop laughing thinking about that word "hork." (singular form of horks)
thanks
