Good Questions: Design-Oriented Gift Ideas?

10-28-gift.jpgDear AT:SF,

So my boyfriend's birthday is coming up and he is very into design, art, and architecture (HGTV is one of his favorite channels, Eero Saarinen is one of his favorite architects). Needless to say, I can't buy him a chair, but would anyone have any ideas for a gift (preferably around $100) that might fit his interests? Thanks so much!!!

-Anna

Anna,

Just a few ideas offhand:
• A membership to SFMOMA (if you're in San Francisco) or another museum (if you're not)
• Just about anything from the SFMOMA or MoMA stores
• Check out our Best Gifts at Canoe
• If you're in SF, we'd suggest going by, say, Propeller or Scandinavian Details or Zinc Details and asking them for suggestions.
• If you're not in SF, check out Citizen:Citizen for high design-ish items
• We loved DWR's Tools for Living when we saw them in person not long ago

Anyone else?

If in SF go to Dandelion. I love that store and always find the best things there. Even my designer friends in SF go there first for all their gifts.

This might be a pretty cool trinket for your honey: a modular l.e.d. clock... A supercool friend in NYC has one and I covet it greatly.

If you want to get him something really unique, try to find some vintage furniture stores in SF, I assume you are there since everyone else does. Try those stores because you can find really cool unique things for little$. Even look and find Antique markets. Heres a tip. Dont go to ones in the city. Pick a time limit for a drive and try and go outside of the city, because that is where you find the best stuff for less money. Even a half hour can make a big difference on the selection. Dont be afraid of thrift stores either. I was on a trip one time to Rochestor MN because of MAYO Clinic, and found some of the coolest old medical things at the Salvation Army. Does he like Cameras? I like to buy old cameras at small antique shops. They ussually work and are a lot cheaper. I bought a Kodak tourist II for $15 dollars in Kentucky that works perfectly in its original packaging, and in Chicago where I live, I found one that was horribly broken for $150. Spend some time and search for the unique and cool stuff. I love Saarinen too and am saving up for a womb chair.
