Good Questions: Good, local upholsterer for this chair?

2006-01_08_chair.jpg

Hey There!

My boyfriend and I just adopted a beautiful mid-century chair that we would like to have re-upholstered in leather. You would think this would be a simple task, but I'm finding it next to impossible to find a local shop where I can take it. I scoured the ATSF services section, Craigslist and the yellow pages and I can't find anything.

Help?!
Thanks in advance,
Jamie

Jamie points out a Truth: we need to flesh out our local services listings. A good goal for 2007!

In the meantime, we can recommend a professsional upholsterer named Colleen, who's reachable at 415.346.0512. Colleen's not cheap, but she knows what she's doing.

Anyone else out there have anyone else to recommend?

Wally's Auto Upholstery 2707 Geary. My dad has been going there ever since I can remember. He used to restore old cars and Wally was his first stop for any upholstery. Recently I went there to have some classic Goodform chairs redone. Prices were reasonable and work was excellent.

Contact a drapery and upholstery fabric store. They all have a list of recommended upholsterers. Sometimes, the upholsterers will even have pieces displayed at the store. That's how I found mine. I never sell or give away old favorite pieces. I just keep reupholstering them.

I found the following fabric stores in SF

Pindler & Pindler (I believe this is to-the-trade, but you can call and call for an upholsterer.

Does anybody have an idea of what typical or "reasonable" rates are for reupholstering something about the size of the above? I've got something similar I was considering getting upholstered but had no idea what to expect in terms of pricing.

And I have a related question: I have a lovely black leather couch, but two of the three cushions have large rips in the leather. I'm glad to see the upholster-er suggestions above, but does anyone have any knowledge or tips about reviving (or even replacing) these two cushions? Thanks AT.

I can't believe this has come up just when I need two leather cushions for two Chinese oxbow chairs.

I had a loveseat and chair reupholstered in ultrasuede by Mauricio Melendez 650-588-5761. He's reasonably priced (my chair cost $275 & couch $575) and meticulous. The best part for city dwellers is that he'll come to your house to give you an estimate and he picks up & drops off the furniture. Highly recommended, a lot of customers at Sal Beressi fabrics use him.
