Good Questions: Help Me Find a Square Rug?

7-25-square rug.jpgHi AT,

Does anyone know where I can buy a square rug? I would love to find something simple, solid colored, but in a *square* shape, around 8'x8'. Something basic like the Crate and Barrel Palmer Rug (shown here) would be fine. It seems practically impossible to find rugs that are not circles or rectangles. Is it feasible to buy a rectangle rug and have it cut into a square? Please help!

Thanks,

Elaine

Elaine,

You might try California Carpet; they cut rugs to size.

Anyone else?

Why not try FLOR? You can build it to size.

It's very rare but every once in a while I come across nearly square rugs from Tabriz, Iran (I have one now). So if you search long enough, they're out there. 8x8 is a pretty rare small size though. You'll have better luck looking for a 10x10 if that will fit in your space.

You can go to any carpet store, select carpet that you want, tell them the size rug that you need and they will have the carpet bound to finish the 4 edges for you. You can also add a border around the edge if you would like. It's a great way to get any size and color of area rug that you want. Plus there are some very cool carpets available at a vast range of prices.

Elaine, I can attest to the fact that it is just about impossible to find an off-the-shelf square rug. I wanted a 6x6, and ended up getting Flor tiles. In retrospect, I think I should have gotten one cut-to-size, so that I'd have something that's one piece. (The Flor is okay, but I got it in black and lots of debris get stuck on the tile edges, where they meet, so it's not a neat look, even with daily vacuuming.) Wish I had a little Tabriz rug....

Sea - I was just about to buy a large set of flor tiles in black (Toy Poodle - MooMoo Black). I had not heard of the debris issue. What style are you using? Do you think the debris problem is a result of the particular type of tile you are using (some have beveled edges) or would it be an issue with any type of flor tile? I was just getting ready to pull the trigger on the purchase, so I am glad to hear about this now as it sounds like the type of problem you discover once you are unable to return the tiles.

Any further elaboration on the debris problem would be greatly appreciated.

Elaine -

After years of searching for the right size area rug, I finally had some wool sisal carpet cut to fit and I am very happy with it. Almost any carpet store can do this, but the price varies. If I remember correctly, my cost was the price of the carpet plus $2 a foot for binding the edges (so binding on your rug would be $64). Its really a great way to go if you don't mind having a solid colored rug (as that is the way most carpeting in manufactured). The best part is that you now have a near limitless selection of style and color.

Yes, you can go to a carpet store and find one that sells remnants; you can get a very high end carpet that they cut for you, you can either have them do a decorative accent border, bind it or surge the edges; this is a very cost effective and fun look and a way to get higher end carpeting cheaper than their typical per yard charge. :)

Good luck (Dick's carpet in Berkeley is good for this)

Ikea sells a number of square rugs. Whether you will like the styles is another matter.

Another vote for FLOR. I was a little reluctant at first, but I'm actually taking a break from installing it wall-to-wall in my basement this very moment. It looks waaaay better than I expected.

. . .just look in their available sizes and you'll see several square ones listed. Personally I like the Persimmon Rug, but there are lots there from which you can choose according to your own style and colors!

RichardinLA,

Yes, you guessed it - I have Toy Poodle in MooMoo Black. Great color. Since I've been vacuuming it a lot, the problem isn't so bad.... but here are two things I didn't expect before getting them: 1) the edges around each tile are very apparent (even when they're totally black and very clean) - so it looks like a bunch of sqare tiles, rather than a seamless single large square. 2) It isn't right to call what collects in the seams debris - it's more like a sprinkling of white pills. Very hard to get rid of these completely, though they're not really noticeable if you're not looking for them. If you vacuum it frequently (which you'd probably have to do with any black rug), it's not that bad. - I'm still glad I got them, and they feel great underfoot!
(And an aside: not all Flor tiles are equally safe for allergies - I believe Toy Poodle was one of the best, low-VOC, version they had at the time that I called a couple years ago.)

I'm just about to do a square Flor rug in Toy Poodle, too.

As far as the tile-look versus seamless rug look issue goes, my impression is that it depends on the Flor line you order. Some are meant to look seamless, but the ones with beveled edges will look more tiled.

In case this hasn't reached you, FLOR is running a 15% off promotion until Aug 3rd. The code to input is P077H15W.
