Cece is looking for some feedback from the Apartment Therapy readers. She says: Has anyone had experience with the Humanscale Saddle Seat? I am writing a dissertation and in need of a solid office chair. I am a short (5 foot 1 inch) lady and have a difficult time finding something that fits me. After testing out the options at DWR, the Saddle Seat seemed to feel the most comfortable, but I'm concerned that the lack of arms/back might make long-term work unpleasant. Reviews for this chair are impossible to find online. Can anyone help me with a little info?

i work in a small custom cake shop in SF where we have two saddle seats. they are GREAT! i even feel like my posture is better than in a seat with arms and backing. the best part is that when you saddle up you feel ready to get some serious work done!
good luck!

I have a knee chair, that were popular in the mid-90s. It's supposed to prevent you from slouching, but I can still slouch in it. It has no arms, but the real problem is the sore keens and butt I get from just 40 minutes sitting in it. You results may vary.

I guess it all depends on how you are comfortable sitting. It's like people who like to sit on chairs after turning them around. It's perfect for them....but wouldn't be good for me at all.

there is another great company that makes saddle-like chairs: HAG they are out of Norway, and are used in commercial projects throughout the US.

i've sit-tested this chair, and as a smaller lady (5'-2), i found it very comfortable!

We use saddle seats at work, and have found them better than anything else we have tried. The only problems have been when someone has tried getting off them as they would a bicycle- and promptly fallen over (the answer is to go forward not sideways).
Having said that, my mother, who is doing an Open University course which means 4-5 hours of study per day, and an author friend both use knee chairs, and swear by them. Personally speaking, as a 5'3" woman, I like saddle chairs if I am going to be up and down a lot, and knee chairs if I am going to be sitting a lot. What I am saying in a long winded way, is look at what you do in the course of your day, and choose accordingly.

I've tried out this chair for some extended sitting (I'm 5'; there was no issue with the height of the chair for me). I found it not terribly comfortable for how I like to sit, in part because it didn't allow me to lean backwards (I didn't realize how often I lean back and look at the ceiling while thinking through things until I tried this chair), and in part because it didn't allow me to change position easily. And I halfway wanted stirrups because at desk height my legs didn't reach the floor.
On the other hand, I have a friend not much taller than me who swears by it. I think it depends a lot on your personal sitting style.

i don't have any experience with these type of seats, but i do know that a lot of dentists use saddle seats. so if you are interested in one with a back rest, google "dental saddle seat" and you will find them.
