Definitely not new. The shade looks like a Nelson Pendant. the funny light socket/retractable thingy sounds like something out of the 70s so it is entirely possible. These were made in dozens of variations. I'd buy it and own it :)

Can't be new, just check out the yellowing on that thing.
How much do these sell for like on ebay? or craigslist? Don't want to overpay...as i've seen ebay's inflation, even in this economy.

I used to have this very same light in the dining room of a house i rented in college and I loved it. The raising/lowering mechanism was so handy! It is definitely vintage, and I wish I knew who made it. The shade looks just like a Nelson, but the rest of it...?

It was most likely manufactured by Moe Light, probably around 1958.

I have that exact saucer now in my living room, after it sat in my grandmother's storage since the 50's. It's not new, and it's not Nelson. AFAIK the Nelson designs never included a pulldown mechanism, and the diameter and number of ribs doesn't match the Nelson specs.
