apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Good Questions: Is my extension table out there?

2006_09_05_wegner002.jpgHi there,

I'm having trouble finding a reasonably priced dining room table for our new small house (see floor plan). the living/dining room is one long space, so i'd like to have the flexibility of having an extension table or a drop leaf table (my dream table pictured, a wegner) so it won't overwhelm you when walking in the front door, but we would still be able to seat 8 people on occasion.

Note: Include a pic of your problem and your question gets posted first.

2006_09_05_mk-small-house.jpgI'd like it to be solid wood and something that will last a long time. Also, is anyone else tired of the "espresso" stained furniture out there? I would like to find something in walnut or even oak or maple. My style is more mid-century modern than sleek/contemporary. We have a few vintage Danish pieces mixed with newer vintage-inspired furniture. And I don't want to spend more than $1,500 if possible.

Any suggestions? Thanks for your help!

Meredith

Hi Meredith,

There are often great mid-century drop leaf tables for sale on eBay, but if you're looking for a sure thing, you should take a look at the Ardre dropleaf table from Great Nordic Design. Ardre comes in solid birch or oak and is a little over your budget, at $1,798....but it does seat eight when fully open, and looks like it will fit your space nicely.

Other ideas?

Meredith, I remember your mentioning in another email that you're in Seattle. Assuming you're open to vintage pieces and are keeping an eye on Craigslist, I've also heard about three stores -- haven't checked 'em out yet -- that might have your table: Area 51, Hybrid, and Standard Home.

Seattleites, any feedback on these stores?

thanks lisa & leslie,

the ardre drop leaf table is a great resource. i already contacted great nordic design and a catalog & samples are on the way.

i've been to area 51 before, but thank you for the hybrid & standard home suggestions. i will check those out as well since they look promising for vintage pieces.

Meredith, you might also look at CB2's envelope table. It is well priced (well under $1000) and well made. Seats up to 8.

Good luck.

Try Ikea's Nygar (sp?) table that seats 4-6 and opens w/ a latch to extend further and seat 8. We use it as a dining table (beech) and have another as a work table with a white surface. About $100-200, if on sale. I don't see it in the catalog, but it is in the store.

This is different from the style of the table you posted, but SO CUTE--you may like it. I want it but I really don't need another table...

Hi,
I've been looking for the something similar and just came across this table at Pottery Barn. Looks like it's on sale right now for $599. Not sure if it's quite what you're looking for, but a good alternative for a small space where you'd like to entertain once in a while. See ‘more images’ on this page for the different ways it opens. The description says it would seat up to 8!
Cheers!

Hmmm. Guess if you put something in the URL it doesn't actually show the link:

I live in Seattle and don't know about Hybrid or Standard, but Area 51 has some great stuff.
