Good Questions: Jennifer Convertibles?

AT,

Have you or any fellow AT readers had any experience with Jennifer Furniture or Jennifer Convertibles? There's one here in SF on Van Ness and their prices are very tempting. I just moved to a place and am in desperate need of some living room furniture. Take, for example, the set shown here for $799. . .

. . .Quite a deal if you ask me. JC Penney has some great stuff as well, but when I saw this, I just couldn't believe the styling for the price. But before I waste my time and get my hopes up, I thought I'd ask the experts in the know.

Thanks!

Vince

Vince,

We actually know two people who have been very happy with their sofabeds from Jennifer Convertibles. That said, our assumption is that with a price like that, you're not going to be handing down those pieces to your grandchildren. But do check out the comments about Jennifer in this post on AT:NY, and also here on design*sponge.

AT:SFers, any advice for Vince?

I've purchase a nice leather sofabed from them. Great quality and would buy from them again.

I went to look at their stuff once......spent 45 seconds before turning around. Ikea quality without the cool design. You get what you pay for...

I bought a Jennifer convertible for my studio apartment, and it is the single worst purchase I have ever made. The sofa was short on style; the sleeper was unbearably uncomfortable. I tried to return it within 24 hours to Jennifer, and they wouldn't allow it. There is no way that the unfolded sofa in the showroom was the same as the one that I tried to sleep on--just like sleeping on a bare metal row of rods. It made its way out to the street, where it became someone else's problem. With so may other stylish options out there now (i bought this awhile ago), stay far away!

There was a lady in my office who had a terrible experience with them. The model she wanted was not on the floor and so she oredered from the catalog and when it was delivered she said it was incredibley uncomfortable. They were rude and made it near impossible for her to return it even though she called immediately.

I've heard nothing but horror stories. You absolutely get what you pay for, so unless Ikea is your second choice, do not buy from JC!!! Good luck with your shopping - I know it's hard to shell out for a nice sofa...

I'm still cranky with them. Grrr.

We bought a convertable sofabed from them, for guests. The saleswoman in the San Rafael store assured us that it was nothing like the "ones with the bar in the middle of your back," that I had asked about. And sure enough, the one on the sales floor *was* very thick and seemed different.

Same as Lydia. I honestly think it was some kind of bait and switch deal. The mattress support doesn't even fold out flat. The head section is about 3" higher than the foot.

We kept it as a sofa ONLY and bought inflatable beds which are way more comfortable than this $900 piece of junk.

==> If you don't need a bed, it might not be as bad for just a sofa. But also look into Scandanavian Designs. I LOVE my affordable sofa from there.

Just do a websearch. You'll get all the relevant info instantly. A lot of people have posted out there about this company. That company has been successfully sued for fraud by the State of NY (2x) and the State of NJ (1x). Bait and switch and belligerent customer service is their m.o. Buyer beware.

That said, I rolled the dice last year and ordered an apartment size sofabed for $399. Just couldn't find the price, fabric and size anywhere else. It came 6 weeks after they said it would, but it was an easy delivery, is a great sleep for guests (no complaints) and no problems so far.

Mostly agree with the comments above in that "you get what you pay for" and without good design. That said, I once had a loveseat from JC that actually lasted forever and was very comfortable. It was basic and inoffensive like the one pictured. If you are looking for a sofabed that people will use frequently, I don't think they are super comfortable; for occasional usage you could get away with one. My mom very recently bought one for her back den for occasional visitors and it serves it's purpose.

I can't comment on Jennifer, but a good friend of mine has a sofa he bought at JCP and is quite happy with it.

That said, I would encourage you to follow the advice of the lovely Nate Berkus who advises that, as the largest piece of furniture you'll probably ever buy, 1) choose something that you love in a versatile, classic style and 2) see it as an investment. If that means spending more money, save for it while looking for the sofa you can't live without.

I read all the internet hits on Jennifer and was scared out of my mind. I took a chance and bought the very set you pictured. I love it. I did however have to dress up the room, i.e. got different tables, great artwork for the walls. The set was a little bland on it's own, but with lots of design in the room, it looked great. The delivery was also perfect - very nice people, no problem at all. Maybe I just lucked out, but I love the furniture. I wasn't financially in a position to buy top dollar at the time, so I took the chance.

I agree with Maryj--if you can't afford to spring for a great quality sofa that you love (there's just not too many great thig=ngs for under a grand), then I'd wait, and buy something on craigslist for now. Look for someone who has to move--there are such steals! I always see great sofas on there too (though I don't regret investing in my down-filled slipcovered couch from Macy's last year).

I bought my brown leather JC sofa + love seat on craigslist for $250 and it looked brand new. The guy was getting married and they needed to get rid of the furniture. Even if it was $400, I'd say it's still a good buy. The leather's not top grain buttery soft, but the cushions are plenty comfortable.
